Dookie was more tragic IMO. Atleast Michael is street smart and looks like he's going to become the next Avon/Marlo/Omar..

Dookie was just hopeless ...that final scene with him and Michael was one of the saddest things i've seen on tv.

I actually go with Locke. The dude was just so screwed over and manipulated. Then when he finally hits his stride and gets his legs back, he is told he needs to leave the one place he could be happy.

Dude got dragged over the coals then pissed on.

1. Shane Vendrell (When murder suicide is your best option you have suffered the most tragic character development in a tv series)
2. Dookie (I agree)
3. Bubs (I don't care if he eventually got upstairs...I can't even say the kid's name that died...)
4. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce (History was re-written for his existence to become bearable)
5. Sam and Dean Winchester (Pretty much a never ending tale of woe)
6. Saul Tigh killing Helen

Where was it re-written? But yes, his story was pretty tragic, along with Fred's.

But John Locke isn't even John Locke anymore, so he sort of doesn't count.

That's kinda the point. He was manipulated his entire life by forces beyond his understanding feeling that his life had actual purpose, when it was all just a bad joke on him. From the tv series I've seen, Locke is easily the most tragic.

but he was always hopeless

michael wouldn't even take marlow's money in season 4 and he was by far the most responsible, mature, and had the best work ethic of the group

but i never was sympathetic towards locke, especially on the island. i don't know how much of his development was tragic

he started off as a dick and ended up dying as a dick

None of the 4 were always hopeless. I don't think Dookie's fate was sealed and thus his fall into drugs is tragic.

Most of it being tragic is how he was so pathetic off of the Island before the crash, but people kept assuring him he was special and had a higher purpose. When he got on the Island and could walk again, and especially when he survived the Monster and met the Others, he was finally a believer and was convinced it was his destiny to lead the Island and protect it and the people on it. This of course was nothing more than manipulation so MIB could get off the Island. He may have been an a-hole in your mind by trying to force people stay on the Island, but he is certainly an extremely flawed, sympathetic, and tragic character.

When I first saw the thread title my first thought was Jacob, because his character development was pretty bad (i.e. tragic).

I don't watch much TV but from what I have seen, Locke is the winner.

Spoilers:

Dad steals his kidney, dad tells him he isn't wanted, dad tries to kill him, gets crippled, then he gets manipulated into doing things that ultimately turn everyone against him, then gets manipulated into thinking he must die, attempts to kill himself only to be stopped and given hope by the man that ultimately murders him. If there is someone worse, I'd like to see it.

I'd argue that Bodie's storyline is the most tragic on the Wire. He's a loyal soldier, and a guy you're set up to hate after what he does in Season 1, but his end is just so tragic. It's horrible to be a pawn, even worse to realize you are a pawn and unable to change it. Remember, it's Bodie that inspires McNulty to go back to being McNulty. In way, he was McNulty's only friend.

Deangelo Barksdale's was pretty tragic in Season 1/2. Frank Sobotka in Season 2 as well.

We'll see what ends up happening to Tommy Gavin on Rescue Me

Sobotka ran shite at the port though, so it's hard to classify him as tragic because of all the benefits he reaped because of his position. He was just unlucky to have a son who was essentially the definition of a frickup.

Tht's what tragedy is. Being undone by our hubris. Sobotka's walk to meet the gangsters at the end of the penultimate episode of Season 2 is perhaps the best moment of the show.

He didnt reap the rewards of it. He turned to criminal activity to keep the livelihood of the stevedores alive. He used the money to try to improve the conditions of the port so his friends and familiy could work

I guess its just hard for me to consider him tragic because of the power he had through his position at the port. But you make a good point about his desire to keep the stevedores going which forced him to turn to the Greeks. People were kinda down on the port storyline when Season 2 first aired but it was some of the best stuff the Wire did.
