It felt half assed and didn’t stick to the actual MK story line
The start and ending were awesome though
Cole for being a decedent of Scorpion is a bitch
Goro going out like that is bullshite
Sub Zero and Kano casted perfectly
Overall it felt like the people who put this film together didn’t know shite about MK

Okay, just finished.
First thought: it’s a shut up and enjoy it movie.
Seemed overly set up for a sequel movie.
Still a good watch, these days.
Just don’t overthink it or expect too much.

quote:when you're an actual fan of the franchise this is so frustrating. There actually is a better story there to be told. So, when it comes time to make a film after almost 30 years of decent source material, use it. Also, when you're making a film based on multiple martial arts, use real martial arts based fighting and not generic film action fighting.
Just don’t overthink it or expect too much.
Frustrating when you know so much could have been done, even if we are getting a new character..have him relevant to the story. Name him Taven and you may have something..sonya finding her powers off-screen,Raiden not doing his job when tsung was obviously cheating, mileena being there was pointless being there was no kitana btw..was obviously made by people who had no idea about this franchise.
Imagine if you and a select few had seen Breaking Bad in its entirety. You want to give this to the world, golly..it would be nice to have relevant conversation with people who know of but haven't had an interest in decades..
Then you hear they are bringing the Breaking Bad story to life. We've all seen with marvel what can be done when the source material is there and well written, hell..look at what they did with game of thrones when they still had books, no way they can frick this up.
...You're excited for the premiere..you take a moment to remember what its meant to you over the decades.
Then this premiers..
and worse yet..people think its acceptable cause they don't know any better, and they don't know any better because when it comes time for a film, its made for cheap pops.
In the video game world, what they can't get right and what hurts game adaptations..when it comes time to make a film.. its time to focus on story. Canon story of what got you there in the first place.
Eta
if you watch the storyline cut-scenes on YouTube from the Mortal Kombat 9, 10 & 11 games, you'll find a better written story. MK 9 was still on xbox 360, so it doesn't look as good but it sets the updated foundation of the story.

Haven’t seen anything except the fairly cheesy 90s one. Are the other more recent versions good?

Name him Taven
No, NO, NO
One of the best things that 9, X and 11 did was relegate the shite characters like Taven and Shujinko into irrelevancy.
I still maintain that the best way to do this is an HBO series. Use season 1 to introduce the characters in bunches:
Special Forces vs. Red Dragon vs. Black Dragon
Matoka Tribe and the mantle of Nightwolf
Make an entire episode one of Johnny Cage's shitty movies (Ninja Mime, Massive Strike, Citizen Cage, etc.)
Lin Kuei vs. Shirai Ryu
Order of Light vs. Brotherhood of Shadow
Outworld conquering Edenia
Orderrealm vs. Chaosrealm
Shokan vs. Tarkatans vs. Centaurs vs. OshTekk vs. Kytinn
quote:

This can't be said enough. Mileena's entire existence is a contingency plan. She was created to replace Kitana should she ever find out the truth about her father and turn on Shao Kahn (and in the newer canon, Sindel as well)

Ryan Reynolds wants to be Johnny Cage apparently

While I KNOW it would work...he'd overpower the rest of the cast and may even be TOO over the top. Also, I don't know if he's loud enough.

Finally watched this
First reaction - a couple cool fight scenes and not much else. I don’t know a ton of the story of MK, I played the games as a kid but wasn’t old enough to pick up on the story much. The finishing moves were cool in the fights, some neat effects here and there. Movie tried way too hard to set up a sequel

Actor who played Jax, claims older Mortal Kombat movie was racist.
White washing rayden with a white guy, was typical Hollywood bigotry.
He claims this movie made up for the past racism.

Says the actor who "blackwashed" Jimmy Olsen.

Finally watched it. I haven't read all the pages in this thread, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this.....
MK 1995 >>>>>>>> MK 2021

Did anybody else laugh their asses off in the training scene where Kano keeps getting put on his arse with low leg sweeps.

I definitely enjoyed that.

Well yeah, but the new movie was never going to be able to compete with the nostalgia of 95 no matter how good it was

I mean it gets more points for being a fuller storyline whereas MK2021 is just a movie more devoted to setting up a sequel. Otherwise MK1995 is very cheesy, dumb dialogue, bad acting, bad casting.
