I feel like a bit of a hypocrite because I think Hollywood has gone too far away from origin stories and jump right into things too often when they really shouldn't, but here I'm just not sure about it.

I don't care about Bond's background. He is a secret agent, he is basically supposed to be a ghost. I think all it will do for a Bond series is set up a lazy "Oh no, they discovered his identity" storyline that the producers can milk instead of coming up with something new and interesting.

The game is also covering a similar story

Seems unwise to do that around each other but what do I know

Yea, let me guess. The film ends with Bond meeting a middle aged Q and Bond introduces himself as "the name's Bond, James Bond." Bond breaks the fourth wall with a wink and we get a cut to the Bond theme!!! woohoo origin stories!

If this is the case, they’ll be casting someone late 20’s/early 30’s.

when i was 9 my dad gave me his playboys from the early 60's were all the bond books were serialized and told me he thought i'd enjoy reading them since i loved to go with him to the movies.

so i can tell you in the books which were not written in a linear time form he's between 36-38 and nearing the end of his roles as a double 0. it might make since to cast a younger actor in the role so they don't have to worry about him aging out of the role.

i've also thought it might be cool to go back to original source material, the only thing the roger moore films had in common with the books were the title and the villain's name.

they kind of did that with daniel craig who was depicted in casino royal as bond on his initial assignment as a double 0 in the opening scene

Seems kind of dumb to go back that far as the main focus of the movie. Part of the allure of the character is the lack of a set backstory or really any permanent ties. Allows much more freedom for the filmmaker. I don't think anyone really wants to see him as a British navy officer either.

It wouldn't be the worst thing to have a few flashbacks, but the main story being about his far past? Meh.

I am 8 books into the series currently, and so far not once has Fleming made any mention of Bond's origin. You know why?

Because it's fricking irrelevant and uninteresting.

Keep reading. There’s a detailed background of pre 007 Bond near the end of You Only Live Twice. Based on that he was made a Commander at no later than 23 years old, so they could actually go quite young.

Would this be a WWII period piece? I just don't see this having enough appeal for casual fans to care...or hardcore fans for that matter.

As previously mentioned, this isn't really a period of Bond's life that people care about. Casino Royale gave us a 00-agent in training look already. The constraints of what could be told in this setting don't seem conducive to a Bond movie.
