Monsters of God (HBO Documentary from the Tiger King director)

Tiger King vibes but with reptiles. The opening scene will determine if you want to watch this documentary or not 
God I hate snakes.
Only the first episode has been released so far. Going to be five episodes. Definitely can tell it was made from the Tiger King guy because it has a similar feel, but can't imagine it being quite as crazy.
This Hank Mott guy is a scumbag. Hopefully bad things happen to him.

I tried to get my wife to watch it with me but she didn’t even make through the first scene, but she has an irrational fear of snakes. The guy at the beginning definitely has a death wish with all that foolishness. The guys that made it were on Joe Rogans Podcast last Thursday.

Yea I have no idea how that guy has lived as long as he has. I was in bed watching with headphones on and I let out an audible "Whoa" when the snake spring through the hole in the box. Woke my wife up

Stumbled upon the first episode last week. I'm all the way in.
These assholes are directly responsible for importing invasive species that are destroying ecosystems.
There's a reason it was illegal to traffic these damn things.

I don’t know much about this show, but all I’ll say is that I consider myself somewhat tough. Don’t get spooked by a lot of things. But when it comes to snakes, I turn into the biggest bitch boy on the planet

As someone who loves reptiles and has owned reptiles my whole life, im dreading this a little. Docs tend to sensationalize things a lot. I dont want to see a documentary about only the batshit craziest assholes of the trade/hobby.
The maker of this actually shot the footage for this before tigerking. He did tigerking first and after it took off this one got sidelined. He himself is a reptile guy so hopefully its a balanced view.

My cousin works for FWC. He's the Alligator Management Program Coordinator now, but he was previously over invasive species and exotics in Florida. Some of the stories he's told me would blow your mind. These dudes are absolutely batshit. He's had to deal with the dudes in this doc actually.
It's absolutely insane to me that owning exotics in Florida is legal. Or anywhere in the U.S. for that matter.

I get where you're coming from, so I'll be as fair as possible.
The vast majority of these exotic species have no business being in North America, for a whole host of reasons. They're impossible to keep out of the ecosystem, and they have no known predators (aside from people, and people cannot kill them fast enough). What benefit is there to keeping exotic reptiles as a pet, knowing how fast they breed, the relative impossibility of keeping them sterilized, and the inherent risks once they escape captivity?
People were smuggling these things into the country. It's irresponsible past the first generation, at the very least. How does something like this keep from being sensationalized?

The rest of the episode was good. I'm a sucker for documentaries about tiny subcultures I'd never heard of.
Even with my hatred of reptiles, the lack of empathy that some of these "enthusiasts" show for these animals is nauseating.

Yep. Pissed me off when ol boy just put all of them in the back of his vehicle to die. Cold blooded.

I agree that this isn't really a doc about reptiles at all. It just happens to be what this band of lunatics was slangin around. Reptiles are a side story at best. Great doc so far.

Yep, these types of docs are my favorite. Ones about subculture that I would know nothing about if it wasn’t for the doc. Tired of all the murder mystery docs, we need more of these types.

With the second episode we see that these guys get much worse. I'm guessing that by the fifth episode we'll have Satan duct-taping iguanas to Hitler's chest and shoving him onto a transport plane.

I’m waiting for the episode of the ex cocaine cowboy from Miami that owns the exotic animal farm down there. He was in a book I read about the Miami drug wars. He was shot several times and survived hid most of his cash (tens of millions) before he was arrested did like 12 to 15 years in prison became a born again Christian dug up all his cash when he got out and opened up a wild cat sanctuary or something down there. He’s like 65 with a 25 year old girlfriend or something

I surely didn't think episode 2 would take the turn it did - so quickly into the drug trade.

Ep 2 went straight cocaine cowboys. This thing is amazing . The people being interviewed seems to still be legitimately afraid of Mario. Guess he still has a lot of pull in that city
