finished it this weekend. fiance' and i enjoyed it. only complaint was it was probably the least scary out of all of flanagans works. i thought Pym seeing gugino in her real form at the north pole was really cool and it makes you wonder what she really looks like, was wondering if we were going to get to see her as a demon or devil. ole boy torturing his wife was brutal, it was satisfying to see his death. for those who read the original story, was that how the sister in the basement part played out?

I give Flanagan a ton of credit in his ability to churn out these quality horror mini series every october. in an age where it takes sometimes 3 years to get the next season of a series, his work is much appreciated. only one i havent seen is midnight club because it looked to be geared more towards a young audience.

also surprised to see some midnight mass hate on here. i thought it was a masterpiece

Good for you. And because of that, there will be more political shite (one sided) and it will become more obnoxious.

I don't enjoy being lectured to by a derivative fantasy horror movie, but to each their own. There are still enough shows out there that don't feel the need, fortunately.

The sensitivity of the viewers in this thread are alarming. I couldn't imagine getting through anything if I turned it off because I didn't like what someone said. I finished it last night and thought it was thoroughly enjoyable and enjoyed all of the Poe Easter eggs. I think it is super cool how Flanagan sorta has his own "troupe" of actors in all his series.

It’s all personal preference. I have better ways to spend my time than have a DEI agenda shoved down my throat. That’s my opinion. I don’t fault anyone for watching, but I’m also not the bad guy for not wanting to watch it.

If you enjoyed it, that’s all that should matter.

I enjoy Poe works... I honestly found this to be the most enjoyable series he has done.

Not the scariest, but the one I liked the most

Yes. In the original story, Roderick buries Madeline alive. I can't recall if it's intentional or not. She escapes and strangles him to death as the mansion falls down around them.

You could almost guess how everyone was going to die.

That's because each episode they basically showed the dead body of the person that was going to die. It wasn't too hard to surmise what was going to happen.

That and the episode titles. Who doesn’t know what’s coming in “The Pit and the Pendulum”? Still fun seeing how they make it happen.

When was it shoved down your throat? I rolled my eyes at the 3 minute monologue at the end. But I didn’t get the DEI throughout.

Pretty sure he’s talking about the racial makeup of the cast.

Which would lend some credence if they casted those actors/actresses for DEI sake. It’s less that and more almost all of them have starred in other Mike Flanagan productions. It’s like the Judd Apatow Troupe for Horror.

Ahh. I didn’t see it that way. I just thought the old man liked women. Regardless of color.

But he married and loved the white chick. And the bastards were mixed. Wouldn’t DEI agenda have him in love with a black woman?

I guess I’m not as woke to pick up on all the social and political agenda.

Finally finished it. Liked it better than Bly Manor but I think Flanagan lost himself in his message this time around, particularly at the end. The thing that made Midnight Mass and Hill House great was that it wasn’t JUST about the message he was trying to tell, he also cared deeply about the characters and story in each of those series. It was still well done but you can tell Flanagan just didn’t care as much about these characters or this story.

I especially disliked Madeline’s message at the end. It felt like Flanagan beating us over the head one last time. But the show fell flat for me in the character department. Even deeply hated characters like Bev from Midnight Mass and Olivia from Hill House were extremely well done and nuanced. The only characters that really had any nuance to them in Usher was Pym. He ended up being the most interesting. The rest of them just ended up being characters you just wish died, which of course Flanagan wanted but I think not making them more human and nuanced and not just one-note rich assholes really missed the mark for me.

I still liked it and it was still well done but it’s not Hill House or Mass for me

I only got 1 episode into Midnight Mass, but Mrs. Vox and me will revisit that one.

I'm not a fan of the "anti-consumerism" rant that Madeline went off on at the close, but I'm such a Poe fanboy that IDGAF which DEI boxes they checked. I found it immensely entertaining the way Flanagan and the writers wove a cohesive story out of the disparate source material.

This was the Edgar Allan version of when they work two dozen Billy Joel songs into a Broadway show and make it the best 3H you sat through.

I took it that Roderick was trying to spread his bloodline as much as he could through many different women to try and beat the curse till he got too old to cock sling anymore and settled down with the little weirdo. I laughed way to hard at her getting hit in the face with the mic stand.

It wasn't really a curse. Verna didn't trick them. She was very clear on what the terms of the bargain were. Roderick just didn't look far enough into the future to understand the consequences of what he and Madeline agreed to. Remember the scene when Verna came for Lenore? She made a comment about how it shouldn't be up to her to have to explain the definition of the word bloodline. She clearly did not want to kill Lenore because she was an innocent, so she granted her a peaceful and painless death.
