Not that surprising tbh, but still disappointing.

Hollywood is not just about talent anymore—it’s also about social media numbers. Actress Maya Hawke recently revealed that some directors have told her that film producers set follower count targets when casting roles. This means actors with more social media followers have a better chance of being hired.

She said she has wanted to delete her Instagram account, but she hasn’t been able to because, unfortunately, in this day and age, it could be the reason she doesn’t get cast in a film role.
One of the changes in Hollywood is valuing internet fame more than talent, which Maya described as really “difficult.” She said, “It’s like, I don’t care about Instagram. Instagram sucks. ‘Right, but just so you know, if you have over this many followers you can get the movie funded.’ Well, I wanna make the movie so… it’s a really confusing line to walk.”
quote:
“I’ve talked to so many smart directors about how I’m gonna delete my Instagram, and they’re like, ‘Just so you know, when I’m casting a movie with some producers, they hand me a sheet with the amount of collective followers I have to get of the cast that I cast so if you delete your Instagram, and I lose those followers, understand that these are the kinds of people I need to cast around you.’”

So Joe Rogan is the new Marlon Brando?

Isn't that just a different way of saying they're casting a more famous person, which isn't really new? Also she's got 9 mil Instagram followers and had a pretty good leg up on most actresses when trying to get her foot in the door.

Interesting. Seems like the fact of bot followers on social media would make it not as relevant.

Is this any different than casting a star based on box office history?

Newsflash - Directors are cast , not hired as well.
Not just actors.
* I blanked on who Maya's parents were. Not that it matters.

Newsflash, Maya: popular people are cast into movies because it sells more tickets.
She had no problem getting a leg up because of her connections. At least folks with followings put in some effort to market themselves

A Joe Rogan movie would make bank
Yes Maya, your personal following is very important for determining how much the movie will make in the box office

Can you still buy followers on IG? I know that was a thing about 8 years ago, had lots of friends buying followers to boost themselves up the rankings.
