It's not Cinema...I'd go so far as to say MArvel movies shouldn't be up for any awards either

Except those are film awards, not "cinema" awards.

Scorcese's Cinema doesn't include A LOT of stuff that is on the screen. Fantasy Movies, Slapstick comedy, Absurd Comedy, a good chunk of science fiction, anything Animated, Experimental film, etc.

Exactly what I meant. The Layla Miller “I know stuff” volume.

I think Wolf of Wall Street is pretty low brow, also.

He's mostly right.

That's true of a variety of big budget franchises - Transformers, F&F (ironically, flirts with being cinema more than a lot of these), new Star Wars films, Star Trek since 2009, etc.

Nothing wrong with "theme park" versions of film - lots of fast, random action for the Millenials. They make money.

Why so offended at the notion they aren't "cinema"? They're not.

Movies aren’t just art, they’re also entertainment. And Marvel is some pretty good entertainment.

personally, and this is just my opinion, the term Cinema i believe is an outdated term, and not the "all encompassing" term it used to be. times changed, and it has been used less and less in favor or terms like movies.

Marvel movies capture Disneyland and fake movie productions with fake production...with fake green screens and fake CGI... Nothing about it is Cinema. Or film.

So just because that technology wasn’t available decades ago when “cinema” was in its golden age, that means it cannot now be included as cinema? If so, there are tons of other movies that don’t qualify as cinema, not just comic book movies.

If comic book movies ceased to exist starting tomorrow it wouldn’t bother me one bit. I’ve seen a decent chunk of them but I’m far from a “fan”. I don’t hate them, they’re fine, but I don’t really care about them. I’d choose a Scorcese movie over a comic movie any day of the week. But I just think the definition of cinema, like all art, is extremely subjective with no absolute right or wrong

They ruined Layla for me when they exposed her power of knowing stuff bc she went into the future and transferred her knowledge to a younger version

James Gunn's response:

Martin Scorsese is one of my 5 favorite living filmmakers. I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. I’m saddened that he’s now judging my films in the same way.

I just read he was also upset he couldn't get a studio to fund The Irishman for $160 million and had to go to Netflix.

I know inflation is a bitch but if you can’t make a period drama flick for $100 million or less maybe you are part of the problem.

That's an even worse comment

Superheroes are the modern myths, folk tales, etc. Sure, since science is a thing we aren't using myths to transfer information across generations, or to explain the world. But the battle of good vs evil is as old as time itself.

That, and if you can't see humanity in Steve or Tony's arc.....you'd obviously not want to see one.

Well said. They are entertainment, which isn't necessarily the same thing as great cinema.
