ETA: Francis Ford Coppola weighs in

quote:

"When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration.

"I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again," the 80-year-old filmmaker said.

"Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is."

quote:

Most recently during an interview with Empire, however, Scorsese revealed his opinions about one of the biggest moneymakers going in Hollywood today – comic book movies, or more specifically in this case, Marvel movies. When the subject of the Marvel Cinematic Universe came up, Scorsese had the following to say:

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Meh. If it was about Capo Amerigo and Thor "Big Hammer" Odinson trying to knockoff Thanos, the head of the Greek mob he'd think it was high cinema.

He's right you know .... and he's being kind in his wording. They are fun movies but they are not great cinema,

Great cinema is Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Godfather I & II. The Year of Living Dangerously. The English Patient. There are many more imho but the gist of my point is that if you have to rely on all the CGI and special effects .... it's meant to take you for a ride but I's not necessarily good cinema.

I don't think those movies are meant to be good cinema. I think they are meant to cross all demographic lines, be entertaining and make a crap ton of money.

IMHO that's what cinema is supposed to do. I can't believe I'm actually defending the MCU here, but Scorsese's definition of cinema is subjective. If a film does what it sets out to do then in my opinion it's good cinema.

I was with you until you said Th English Patient. That movie is only remembered for the Seinfeld episode that mocked it for how much it sucks.

The dude who made Hugo, a love letter to a filmmaker who is most famous for doing fantastical adventure films like A Trip to the Moon and The Impossible Voyage, doesn't see Marvel movies as real cinema?

He didn’t say great cinema, just cinema in general. I’m far from a marvel/comic book fan, but there are many different forms of cinema regardless of how good or bad they are. It’s all subjective

He's 100% right.

No he isn't. They all have the various themes he claims they don't have.

quote:

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.

So first,he says he tried to watch them but gave up. So... does that mean he saw Iron-Man and quit? Is he even talking about the MCU or comic films in general?

quote:

Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.

Does this mean movies like Jurassic Park, the Harry Potter series , Terminator, and Tim Burton's Batman films are not cinema as well?

quote:

It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

I'm not sure how he can even say this when he admits that he does not watch them. Iron-Man movies are about a guy who believes in privatized security that sometimes overrides personal freedom. Captain America movies are about resisting governments that seek to control those freedoms. Thor films are about a familial dealings within a royal family.

Now you could say the way those things are conveyed is clunky and poorly done and that would be a legitimate discussion to have. But to say they just don't exist at all is completely wrong. The last two MCU movies (Endgame, Far From Home) both heavily dealt with how people react to losing loved ones.

Scorsese's entire premise is based off an incorrect notion that just does not hold water when you actually dissect the movies in question.

In a single snetwmece, Scorsese sums up exactly what made the motion picture industry the preeminent entertainment form for 100 years.

The A-number 1 aspect that makes it special are the stories of human to human and emotional strings that the movies pull. Watching only a "spectacle" picture can still be fun, it's not movie-making. It's, as he said, a theme park ride.

That's a shame. He would have been a great choice to direct an X-Factor movie based on Peter David's run in the comics.
