Is an incredible book. One of my favorites. I think the movie absolutely nailed the casting of the characters.

Bro, Ashley Judd was absolutely smokin' in Heat.

I like the Departed but I've always felt it was overrated. I recently watched Internal Affairs and I like a lot of what the original did differently. I always wished both had more detective work from the Leo character sniffing out the Damon character, because that was the best conflict to me. The ending was a mess and the Leo romance wasn't necessary (and added ro the hammy ending, to me).
Came here to post that The Departed is a remake of another film. Agree with your assessment. Heat was based on a real life criminal robber dynamic:

Buy- The Departed
Rent - LA Confidential
-Honestly I would be fine with these two in either order. Both great movies.
Throw Away- Heat
- Let’s face it, other than the big shootout scene, the rest of the movie is a little overrated. And I can’t stand Pacino’s over acting thru the whole movie.

For sure. Peak Ashley Judd for sure. That's why I said kill Pacino's wife. Casually cheated on him with no remorse simply because he worked long hours.

I wouldn’t want to throw away The Departed, but not given a choice… Also wasn’t Vera getting nailed by everyone in The Departed? Not sure that’s wife material.

Honestly there aren't really any good wife material choices here. I mean Kim Basingers character was literally a prostitute, the wives in Heat were both cheating on their husband, and Vera Farmiga apparently just slept with any client that showed any interest.

What was the tie breaker was Vincent and Chris walking away from the massive bank robbery shootout scene. Freaking awesome scene, loved it, and I get that two of the crew members died, but nobody is just walking away from that scene. So the getaway was a little unrealistic.
I think in the general shock of something so violent happening it’s not so unrealistic. Think about when these things have happened irl and no one knows what the hell is going on in the moment.

Buy: Heat
Rent: The Departed
Throw away: L.A. Confidential*
(*Realistically, The Departed and L.A. Confidential are essentially 2a and 2b)
I owned Heat back in the dvd days so kinda biased. Loved Departed, liked LA.

Yea I mean I don't want to knock the scene much because it was a great scene. One of the best shootout scenes ever really. I mean I was just watching in my living room and I was glued to the TV. But I just think there would have been waaaaay more cops on scene with how long that shootout went on. They would have had every street corner surrounded. They weren't just going to simply limp away from the scene.

Yes, he had a fake I.D., that's essentially what got him off. But they were casing the place and expecting him to drive up. A car drives up and stops right where they would expect him to, so they check him out before he leaves. Presumably, the entire nation knows what this guy looks like after the shootout, much less the cops that are staking the place out for him. Yet they stop him, and they don't recognize him because he cut his pony tail I guess
