Deacon Mark is abductor. Mare bf is Erin killer. He kills Mare and Zabel solves everything cause he liked Mare.

Mare is terrible. Just awful human being. What the hell do these guys see in her? Terrible attitude. Plain as hell with the looks and how she dresses.

Also, dialogue is annoyingly cliched. Type of shite you hear in any other show in this genre. And I hate the stuff where Zabel is basically a clueless idiot and Mare has all the answers.

I noticed this as well last episode

it was definitely a tonal shift that was...bizarre for how dark the show is most of the time

I know. Just was looking for a scenario that has Mare not make it out alive, which I understand absolutely will not happen. I hate that character so much.

It seems nitpicky but its so bizarre to me lol. Especially with the Fincher style color-grading.

I noticed that too on the scene where the daughter and her girlfriend are pulling up on her street about to get caught by the stoner ex gf and the whole grandma gettin hit by the door scene. The music felt very out of place. Also glad the American Horror Story baw got a larger role in that episode, maybe he will get more screen time going forward, hes an underrated actor.

Not sure about the whodunnit, but I'm guessing the kidnapper guy is supposed to be some sort of "savior" complex nut job and the murder of the original girl is an isolated incident and both will be solved because the savior complex nut job unluckily had a similar style murder occur while he was operating. but maybe I'm crazy. That priest is hiding something, but HBO usually doesn't do super obvious so that is throwing me off.

ETA: the accents are like chalk on a chalkboard, people on the Wire talked like that too, must be a lower north eastern thing. Like when they say "water" as "whew-tur" lol.

Mare's Best friends husband or his cousin are somehow involved imo

Ryan

Is Ryan the kid in that random scene that enters his parents bedroom, looks at the news report, and asks, "What are they saying now?"

There was something off about that.

If so, (maybe a stretch) but it's also odd that Guy Pearce's character is Richard Ryan, and Lori's son is named Ryan.

My theory:

Deacon had sexual relations with Erin and is father of her baby, but didn't kill her. He knows his past and knows when she is killed that he will be blamed because he saw her that night and had her bike.

Either the writer, Mare's boyfriend, is the abductor of the two girls that are being stashed in the bar - OR - the other priest/Mare's cousin is.

Don't we know the writer go to town right as the disappearance of Katie occurred?

Was interesting.

But I think they showed the hands of the kidnapper and they belonged to an older man.

They're bad, but accurate and Winslet fricking nails it.

I think Ryan (the kid) knows something.

Richard Ryan (the writer) made a point to note how many random women he had slept with after his success as an author.

Could be totally unrelated, but I just wonder if somehow Lori was one of those women, and either had her son with him, or otherwise named her son Ryan after him.

Would be an interesting connection if it turns out the writer had something to do with it.

I don't think the writer has been in that town that long. I believe he said about a year (which is when the first kidnapping happened).

Oh no doubt that they are accurate and well done lol, it just drives me nuts. I'd take the cajunes of cajun accents over that any day lol. But yeh I agree the scene with the little kid watching the news was off putting and either a major red herring or vital to the whole story imo.

Kate's character was the same in Amonite (now on Hulu), which I also really enjoyed.

She dressed plainly and was rude to most people, yet every man and woman in town wanted to get in her knickers.

I told my wife that someone should make a skit about Kate playing all these unlikable people, yet everyone wants to bang her. She said Kate had the same thing going in Sense and Sensibility.

P.S. SNL has done some good spoof previews of both Amonite (called Lesbian Period Drama) and Mare of Eastown (Murdur Durdur).

I think it has to do with her competition. I haven’t seen one attractive woman in the entire town. At least she has a job (sort of) and isn’t a prostitute. Maybe that why some dude is collecting girls and keeping them locked up. Lack of options.

This may be in keeping with the harsh reality of the greater Pennsylvania area.

Man give her a break she's been through a ton! Yeah she stepped over the line planting the drugs, but Carrie is an awful person, so I could see where she might be pushed to do that!

Clearly very limited options in the area. I mean the best looking woman Mare's age we've seen on the show is probably Jess's mom!
