Wow. Last night I was feeling a bit nostalgic and saw that I had Mallrats on the DVR so I decided to time travel back to the early 90's.

I think I've only seen it once, as opposed to Clerks, which I know I've seen at least 5-6 times. But I remember it being a decent movie.

Um, well, not so much in retrospect.

The acting is godawful for the most part. The worst offender has got to be Joey Lauren Adams as Gwen.

But she's sexy as hell, and much to my surprise, shows her cans for a second, and they are fantastic.

Almost as bad is Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith as Jay and Silent Bob. They seem to have regressed from Clerks.

Jason Lee as Brodie just rants loudly. But he does have some of the funnier lines and Jeremy London as Quint is a decent straight man (holy shite I just realized the Jaws reference to their names!!!)

Ben Affleck plays himself basically.

The shining star is Claire Forlani as Brandi. Holy shite. She may have been the most gorgeous woman on the planet in that role. I know, that's a bold statement, but man!

Holy shite, Priscilla Barnes, who played Terri on Three's Company is in it!!

She plays a mystic named Ivannah.

And she shows her tits!!

And she has three nipples!!! WHAT IS HAPPENING???

Back to the reminiscing...

Oh, and Michael Rooker is in it, and even his acting sucks.

Other things to note: What was up with men's fashion at that time? Why are all the guys wearing cloths two sizes too big for them??

I was in high school in the 80's, finishing college in the early 90's, so that time is all a blur now. But just from this movie, I remember that it was certainly as weird time.

The soundtrack seems to be a strange blend of late 80's not "New Wave", more obscure, but not yet Grunge. Hell there's a song from the punk band All on it.

Lastly, I'll wrap up by saying I think Kevin Smith hit lightening in a bottle with Clerks, and never made another movie that was as good. And Clerks is no Oscar winner, just a good movie made on a crazy low budget that came out of nowhere.

Have I mentioned how gorgeous Claire Forlani was?

Kevin Smith was supposed to release Dogma after Clerks. Watch rolling credits. Then he did Mallrats and Chasing Amy instead. I love Mallrats.

I loved how they tied Julie Dyers death in both. Her death was whole reason for Mallrats since it caused the breakup.

Haven't seen in a while but Lee carried this movie the whole way.

Well damn, I didn't catch that.

My review still stands though. It's not as great as I remember it.

Still quote it a good bit.

If my kids are doing something they aren’t supposed to and we’ve told them to stop already, I’ll say “that kid, is back on the escalator!” My wife doesn’t get it but she’s never seen the movie.

The opportunity isn’t presented often but I’ll always refer to the Hartford Whalers as Hartford, the Whale.

And “I’d do it, but I pulled my back out jumping your mom last night”

I can't watch this or Clerks because the acting is so bad. I like Dogma and I'm glad that Smith waited until he was established before making it, and therefore had more money and better actors at his disposal.

Agreed. Clerks was just one of the early unabashed bits of geekdom flag waving. In an era that has been very over-saturated in geekdom, it's probably funnier now for the wrong reasons.

Mallrats was basically just skater/stoner/geek humor pushed to 11. Chasing Amy and Dogma were woke trash before woke trash became a thing...and more indicative of how I think Smith sees himself artistically.

Clerks has always been a gem to me, because of the whole ridiculous setting of it.

You have two dudes who work meaningless shite jobs and have nothing going for them in life sitting around having these insanely deep conversations about life. They are acutely smart and self aware but obviously can't get out of their own way in regards to life choices and climbing the social ladder.

It's just funny to me.

Agreed on all that.

And in my 20's, I was kinda those guys. Floundering through college with no direction, working part time jobs that all sucked and paid shite. But "coming of age" from a philosophical perspective. Early adulthood causes you to start thinking more deeply about things, and questioning beliefs you'd held as a child.

Forlani was wicked hot. Not sure I saw anything with her after Meet Joe Black.

There's supposed to be a Mallrats sequel coming at some point. We'll see.

I watched Mallrats for the first time about six months or so ago. I liked it, but it wasn't all that great if that makes sense.

Like CW said above, our friend group quotes the escalator part all the time, so it was nice to finally see that in the context of the whole movie (I had previously only seen the scene on youtube).

And yeah, the main girl was gorgeous. And Jason Lee's rants were funny, even if overly forced. And I always enjoy Jeremy London in roles like this one.

Basically, it's a movie that I am glad I finally watched, but am in no rush to watch it again any time soon. And I've wanted to watch Chasing Amy for a while, but after watching Mallrats my desire to see it went down a bit. Not sure I'll ever get a bug to watch it at this point, as I believe it's a bit slower/more "boring" than Mallrats.

I do love Clerks though. Yes, it's not greatly acted, but the dialogue is good for the most part. It's basically two guys just shooting the shite like me and my friends do/used to do. I guess that's why I like it. I do also agree that Kevin Smith doesn't make particularly good movies though. I've never been a fan of his, and he's always seemed to have a very overinflated opinion of himself (and his movies), which I think turned me off a bit in the past. I do think I'd give Dogma a shot at some point though...I've heard good things about it. Zack and Miri was okay. Tusk was trash. Clerks 2 was decent.

Maybe she got tired of servicing Weinstein to get parts?

I had such a high school crush on Forlani, she was the best. I know she did Mystery Men with Ben Stiller around that time, not sure if before or after, and then she kind of just disappeared for the most part, I haven't looked up her IMDB.

My other high school crush was Shannyn Sossaman, she did Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger and then 40 days and 40 nights with josh hartnett and then she disappeared as well. It's just so weird to me how in hollywood, you can go from hot to nothing seemingly over night.

The DVD commentaries on Kevin Smith films have always been more entertaining than anything that he can put on film. It seems like Mallrats was one of the better ones.

She was in the Toby Keith cinematic masterpiece, Beer for My Horses, with Rodney Carrington.

Well, it was supposed to be cartoonish - thus the theme (which was even more clear in Chasing Amy).

I didn't think the acting was as bad as you do, and I've seen it 4 or 5 times to this point.

Jason Lee was still in converted skateboarder mode, but his comic timing and delivery have always been generally good. You can see his improvement from this film to Chasing Amy easily (as, I must suggest to you that JLA did as well). Chasing Amy may have been lightning in a bottle, though, as I thought even Affleck was good (not great, but good).

That works. Just saying that I'd rather be comfortable than wear most of the crap that passes as men's fashion these days.
