First half scary with gore every now and then. Last 30 minutes are a flat out gore fest.

It's very early 80s Italian in feel and content. That twist was something Fulci might have cooked up back in the day. I didn't love how heavy Wan went with the cgi in the climax, but I thought it was overall a blast.

It was played a few times, and yes it was definitely a variation of Pixies “Where is My Mind”

yeh I posted that before they did the longer version. I feel like that is being used in a LOT of films recently. It was an interesting film, I was never got "scary" vibes though but I won't say it was bad.

Watched it Friday night. Wife and I were laughing in the last 30 minutes.

Once we start doing spoilers, I have questions…

The first hour and fifteen minutes, the movie was boring.

Small spoiler******I dont like how Wan just introduces the monster 20 mins into the movie and he is just having a conversation with some random woman he kidnapped. The monster is making a weapon. I am no longer scared nor will I be scared. Dont humanize the monster.******end small spoiler.

The twist and last 30 mins are worth it though. Being high as hell and watching that conclusion....chefs kiss to Wan.

Just finished and really enjoyed it. I hadn’t seen any trailers so went in blind as a big Wan fan.

It’s nothing spectacular in terms of filmmaking but it was different and the twist was pretty good.

Spoilers*******

Well technically it was her twin so somewhat human at the very least, but I do get your point.

End spoilers***

I understand why this doesn't work for you, but I don't understand how you think this is humanizing. Monsters and villains shouldn't have to forge weapons? Like, because that's what poor people do?

Just watched it. Holy shite at that twist. Was not expecting that.

ETA: McKenna Grace as the younger version of the Madison was creepy as hell.

Actually watched this today. It was different, but overall enjoyed it. Pretty sure he was going for campy and he nailed it. Some of the acting was not so great.

Watched this because of this thread holy shite did not see those final 30 minutes coming. Like someone else said I couldn’t tell what this movie was trying to be for the first hour and was thinking man this movie is ridiculous and sucks but that final 30 minutes brings it all together. I can’t believe this movie was made in 2021

Saw it in theaters tonight. It was silly and I was entertained. When he slammed her head against the wall I said “I need to read the dark half again”

Then I discovered it was a movie so I’ll probably watch it.

I’ve missed the movies. I laughed. But I like most horror, no matter how terrible.

You’re watching it and it’s laughably bad. Following the jump scare routine to a T and you are wondering what in the hell happened to James Wan.

But then…it becomes something you’ve never seen before.

I think it’s quite brilliant, actually

It reminds me a lot of Evil Dead 2 honestly thinking more about it. What a ride

More a suspense thriller than flat out horror imo.

God, I love James Wan.

I don't udnerstand anyone saying that they never got horror vibes from the Pixies. Their whole catalog is basically a horror movie, from the beginning of Nimrod's Son all the way through the Palace of the Brine. Bizarre imagery and unique soundscapes are what the Pixies do. It worked great here.

Is the movie as scary as The Conjuring? No. Is it as genre busting as Saw? Probably not. Is it as thematically consistenet as Insidious? Nope. Does it hold the record for the most time I have said "what the frick" in a horror movie that was not directed by David Cronenberg? Absolutely.

Just a movie that gloriously goes for it, and goes absolutely all in. It's the Jupiter Ascending of horror movies, and I mean that in the best possible way. This is the sort of movie someone makes early in their career, trying to make a name for themselves by going all in. Instead, this is a late career studio film from a guy who has made so much money he no longer has to pretend to give a damn what anyone thinks they want. This was a big budget horror movie for indie horror fans. The group of people who will like it is quite small, but those of us who did are going to absolutely love the hell out of it.
