If you're a television writer, you have an idea for a show and where you want to go with it. One thing that you don't know is whether your pilot will get picked up. Further, how can you be sure it will last more than a season or two. I'm betting once it got picked up for multiple seasons, the writers had to figure out a way to extend the story and so it takes a new path. They then use the flash sideways to bring back in the purgatory element so they could end the series how they always wanted to.
they could have kept up the original format had they not come out and vehemently denied the island being purgatory (when it was obvious after the first season of flashbacks, that the goal was redemption)

No they weren't dead, but they still got their point across.

Maybe because "life" would include purgatory...

Jack just said the the life on the island is real.

+1
Writers just weren't good enough to stick close to the original plan, or thought they could always bring it back to purgatory neatly which IMO they did not do.

but it is obvious they were trying to clearly communicate the island as the key to the afterlife and preserving it, preserved themselves.
what is the island, then?

Right. The "side-flashes" were really a "flash forward" technically.
Not really. Time was meaningless according to Christian, which I would imagine heaven to be like. Its a flashback for people like Boone, and a huge flashforward for people like Hurley and Ben.

Is Marilyn Manson in the audience? I swear I just saw him.

purgatory being part of life not really a traditional concept. Majority of people would accept purgatory as a aspect of the "afterlife"

Which is why "flash forward" is in quotes. I use the term loosely. It's obviously AFTER everyone has died. Therefore, in the future relative to the show we watched.

shite was stupid. I hope Lindelof and that other a-hole never work in Hollywood again. This would have been a great miniseries.
If it were jizz inducing for everyone in America, you would say it sucks.

Depends on how you look at it, but a lot of times it isn't the finale, it's a place of acceptance. The line is thin for sure.

Call me an idiot, but I liked the ending
Same here. I didn't find it an epic ending, but I found it to be a beautiful and bittersweet ending, which is really what I wanted from it.

How would they know how many seasons they were getting?
this is irrelevant
was the point of the show purgatory? yes
did they deny that it was purgatory? yes
did they end the show with purgatory? yes

The entire flash sideways arch ultimately just feels like a pointless side story to me.
It's a nice little message and all but what was the point? The fact that they made it the ultimate focal point of the final season and the overall show was disappointing to me.

But it was not. I still not sure where I stand on the ending. But it was not remotely the greatest 15 minutes of TV as some were saying it was supposed to be.
The last 8 minutes of Six Feet Under kicks Lost in the balls and breaks Lost's neck while pissing on the dead remains.
