New theory:
The entire show was Jack's acceptance of death. Slo is right the after-crash never happened.

Christian closed the open-endedness when he said what he said to Jack.
They LIVED the better part of their life with each other.

Which was my first thought. But showing the crash at the end was an odd, stupid red herring move then.

The plane crash side pan at the end made me wonder though...did Kate and them actually leave...or did they crash and burn.
That was the plane from the origional crash.

Everything that happened on the island happened while they were alive. The alternate reality was something that the people on the island made, a purgatory of sorts, so that they could all get back together again.

the whole, "when you die you end up in the emo-verse" doesn't make sense due to timelines
people who had already died should have been the first to "flash," according to this, and they weren't
also jack died before hurley or ben, yet jack was the last one to flash
As Christian said, there is no "time" in that place. So it shouldn't really matter in which order they flash.

My question is why didn't they bring Farraday with them?
Elloise asked Desmond if he was taking his son and he said no.... So Farraday is stuck in purgatory with his mom while everyone else moves on?

I guess they are letting it be interpreted either way.
But why would those people care about each other, if they never "lived" together on the island. Reading it like that doesn't make any sense.
Of course...

This could just be bad writing. Par for the course.

Yes, I do think that they always had a clever idea that they would bookend the first shot of the series with a shot of Jack's eye closing to end the series. Anything outside of that has been pretty much made up on the fly.
And honestly, I've enjoyed the ride; but it's clear that the writers have often taken the throw shite at the wall approach and see what sticks. Once I was able to get passed the idea that there was a great, planned mythology behind the series and enjoy the show for what it was - I found myself invested in LOST once again.
Except for Across the Sea... that episode was bullshite.

I thought the finale was incredible.
