If you were in Gus or Woodrow's place, would you have hung Jake Spoon for riding with the bad crew he was with? Me personally, I would have heard him out before stringing him up. Woodrow had a strict moral compass which had no room for error. But why was Gus (besides Lori darlin') so quick to hang him?
The carry the body back to Texas ending is taken from the original script of Red River. Wayne is shot, but asks Clift to take him back to Texas so he can die there. They are about to cross the RR when Wayne dies. Clift crosses the river and buries him in his beloved Texas.
This was changed for the movie as Wayne's character doesn't die.

Exactly. Jake knew the sentence was well deserved and didn't want his friends to feel guilt over executing the sentence. Hell, of an acting job by Duval when jake spurs his horse forward.
Jake was an a-hole from the first minute. We see nothing but bad behavior from Jake. Think of all of the things he did over the years that we didn't see. I had zero sympathy for Jake.
And it was different times back then. Horse thieving resulted in death. riding with horse thieves and murderers. Yeah, Jake deserved what he got. Plus he hit Lorena. That alone is punishable by death.

Along with all the fantastic acting comments mentioned. I think Basil’s score hits perfectly during the scenario
When Jake is getting tied up and pleading to Gus, then once again after he’s hung himself and Gus mentions he died fine, didn’t he. The music just adds so much emotion to it. It goes to those soft strings that tug at your heart
