As 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Flops, Are Movies About White Men Box Office Poison? by SCOTT MENDELSON - 2018

how does it feel to be absolutely annihilated and dunked on?

You think I don't know what this author is trying to say when he's written the same story already, just 4 years ago? When he cites Solo in his title and uses 'white men' in his conclusion paragraph, it telegraphs exactly the point he thinks he is being clever and obscuring.

I think what a lot of these companies miss is that by shoving this down the throat of the people who actually work and have kids, they are just alienating them.

Of course there is a large cohort of people on the internet that will bitch a moan about people being transphobic and homophobic, but the blunt reality is that many people who are going about their lives don't want to shove this in their kids face and they don't have to. The outrage from people upset about bigots will fall on deaf ears because most people have too much to do rather than care about what people online are complaining about.

They have their morals, they are sticking to them by not seeing this movie, and that's the end of the thought process. They can go bowling, they can take their kids to an arcade, putt putt, a different movie, the lake, etc.

People are allowed to call these people who opt out of this movie transphobic. And even more beautifully, those same "transphobic" people are allowed to smile, ignore, and keep voting with their wallets.

I know you flat out lied about his Lightyear review, and now you're posting a totally separate review to bolster your imaginary take on what he said.

Here's his review.

Here's the headline:

quote:

Box Office: ‘Lightyear’ Failed To Learn Lessons Of ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

If the headline is going to mention Solo, I'd say what he said in his Solo review is relevant.

Some other choice quotes from the Lightyear review:

quote:

It wasn’t online controversy over a same-sex kiss between two married non-white grandmothers. Jurassic World Dominion and Doctor Strange 2 both have non-white lesbian characters, with DeWanda Wise being a major character in the former. Nobody cares that Patricia Heaton accused Disney of castrating Buzz Lightyear via swapping out Tim Allen for Chris Evans. The loss of the marquee actor associated with the character may not have helped, just as Kathleen Kennedy might argue that swapping Harrison Ford for Alden Ehrenreich (great actor, rent Beautiful Creatures) was an issue for Solo.

With Solo, nobody wanted a prequel origin story action comedy based on the co-lead of an established cinematic brand featuring a different (and mostly unknown) actor in the role. It wasn’t Star Wars fatigue, it wasn’t “bad marketing,” and it wasn’t because online trolls spiked the SEO-driven narrative for the acclaimed, crowd-pleasing (an A from Cinemascore) $1.33 billion-grossing The Last Jedi.

This dude has no clue.

quote:

Throw in the compromised theatrical releases for Raya and the Last Dragon (with a concurrent Disney+ Premier Access option) and Encanto (on Disney+ in just 31 days), and it’s cruelly ironic that Lightyear, a white guy’s heroic journey/prequel origin story flick, is Disney’s first conventional animated theatrical release for a non-Fox toon in over two years. That it’s underperforming is even crueler, especially with the potential for “wrong lessons” being learned.

Oh, well look at that.

Solo failed for two reasons.

1) Bad marketing. No one knew exactly what it was about other than a character they recognize was in it. Lightyear shares this attribute. It was a movie that was just meant to be carried by the lead and nothing else… although most would argue Pixar alone is reason to go. At least it was prior to 2020.

2) Reaction to Last Jedi. Disney made a really really bad Star Wars movie and people were told if they thought it was bad and pointed out the shitty parts, they were nazis or at least sexist. Patronizing your fan base doesn’t make them want to show up for the next one.

In both cases, the similarities are worth noting but it’s the bad faith for both that Disney should learn from more than anything. People are consumers. Give them good stories with heart lead by people you can cheer for and they’ll flock to see it… as long as you don’t tell them they’re horrible people for questioning some obvious decisions solely based on what the creators want instead of what the story and characters require.

74% drop from Friday week 1 to Friday week 2, and Minions will be releasing in five days.

Lightyear is done.

Wow. A Toy Story film is being compared to Cars 3 at the box office.

I just don't think it's possible to express how shocking that is to me.

Most people I know who didn't go see Solo in theaters did so because of TLJ. Hell I almost didn't go see it.

This is spot on, it was a big talking point at the time. It sucks too because Solo was actually a decent flick with a good premise for a follow up that’ll never happen. TLJ soured people on Star Wars though, at least in the immediate aftermath when Solo released.

Are people comparing that to Lightyear? Totally different situations. Star Wars with good stories can remain relevant and desired for years, just look at the interest in The Mandalorian and now Ahsoka.

Lightyear suffers from being a spin-off no one was asking for from a tired franchise that should have ended after Toy Story 3. On top of that, it’s just a boring and bad film so it’s not going to overcome point 1.

I thought the last Jedi was a terrible movie, and directly impacted me not wanting me to see any Star Wars movies in theaters again.

Yep.

Solo was a decent movie and should have done better. TLJ soured the fanbase to "frick you" levels

100%. The people who spent the $51 million to see it this weekend were split with half being woke activists and the other half parents who didn't really know what it was about. The drop next weekend will probably be above 60%.
