Personally I'm on the fence on which one is better. Personally I think Pixar is better than Studio Gibli as a whole, but just Miyazaki, it then gets much more iffy. Both have made some of the best films in the past 20 years and are masters at taking simple concepts and giving them real meaning. Granted if Pixar themselves had a vote, they'd likely vote for Miyazaki, but I'll just sit back for now and see how it turns out. Here's each of their respected filmographies:

Pixar:
Toy Story 1, 2, and 3
A Bugs Life
Monsters Inc.
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
Cars 1 and 2
Ratatouille
Wall-e
Up

Miyazaki:

Castle of Cagliostro (haven't seen this one)
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Ponyo

Never heard of, nor seen those (or the studio).

You've never heard of Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke? As a fan of cinema and someone who puts extreme blind faith in Pixar, you owe it to yourself to at least watch these two masterpieces. Seriously, watch them now. Miyazaki is easily Pixar's biggest influence, and plus Pixar is in charge of all the English dubs. Totoro even makes a cameo in Toy Story 3.

While I do love Miyazaki, I think Pixar wins this one.

I love both. But I'd vote Pixar just because I haven't seen Mitazaki's entire collection.

Spirited Away and Finding Nemo are two of my favorite animated movies of all time. Throw in Lion King. So I consider that a push.

Ratatouille is really the only Pixar movie I don't really care for. And I've liked everything I've seen from Miyazaki, but I haven't seen...

Have a hard time finding his movie. Hard to put those four movies over all of Pixars.

Eh. I have way too much other shite to watch.

BTW, side note: my gf is HOOKED on Lost. We watch an episode about every day. Halfway through season one right now.

I'd say watch Princess Mononoke or Castle in the Sky first. They're fairly easy to get into and are violent and bloody. Princess Mononoke is the plot Avatar should have had and I suspect ripped off, even more so than Dances with Wolves, and just missed the point of the film entirely..

I saw Princess Mononoke a few years ago. I thought it was ok, but didn't make me want to get into the rest of the Miyazaki library.

I love most of the Pixar movies.

Spirited Away is one of the best animated films ever. I would put it on par with Up.

I think this is a wash though, both have stellar titles, and a couple of duds.

I love them both, but I would certainly go with Miyazaki.

Me too, but this board hates Ratatouille for some reason.

Brah, watch My Neighbor Totoro and see if you can walk away from it without a big smile on your face.

Wow, I didn't realize so many m/tv board posters haven't seen any Miyazaki.

I haven't watched Spirited Away in awhile. Need to check it out this weekend. Nothing from Pixar beats it.

Ehhh, I'd honestly say that Ponyo is his weakest film. I just never really bought into it. Yeah the animation was great, but it was nowhere near Mononoke or Spirited Away. I think my major problem was the age of the characters. They were just too young for it to be a love story. 5 year olds have no real concept of true love (when I was 5 I had a hard time processing my parents not always knowing each other), so it made the story less interesting to me.
