1.) Is this movie more about Tristan or Susannah?
2.) Who's fault is it that the Ludlow boys destroyed themselves over the affections of Susannah? Susannah or the boys themselves?
I go back and forth on both questions.

It is a strange story and I always felt bad for the oldest brother. He tried to do the right thing and was the most successful. But everybody fawned over Tristan. I never got why the father was so mad at him. Tristan abandoned Susannah and maybe he felt a need to take care of her (there weren't many women around that part of the country). It's like the world was supposed to stop until Tristan decided to come back home. I get that he had his demons and he needed to work shite out, but the world kept going.
Back to the OP, it's about Tristan. We are supposed to admire him and be in awe of his beauty. Even though he is kind of a selfish douche.
The boys didn't destroy themselves. Only 1 of 3 died in battle and the other 2 made it past middle age. Their wives kicked the bucket early. But both will probably re-marry and have more kids. That's pretty good for the 1920s-40s, right? The family survived and probably prospered..

1. The story is about Tristan
2. Susannah was completely at fault. She was feeling Tristan before the war and then started a relationship while still mourning Samuel. She then marries Alfred though she doesn't love him. She makes advances towards Tristan after his wife was killed. Because of her guilt and loss of Tristan, she killed herself.

Pretty much sums it up.

I think in the context of the story, the idea is supposed to be that there is no controlling love. It's wild like Montana. No one is at fault.
But yeah, it's Susannah's fault.

The story was about Tristan. They even say it at the end, Tristan was like a rock that they all kept crashing into. A wild horse that could not be tamed. Tristan represented the West and its wild spirit that could not be tamed. Fitting he finally died in the wild. It was a good death.

Tristan
Alfred is the only one that you could say destroyed himself over Susannah, although it wasn't total destruction or her fault. His jealousy and insecurity are actually to blame for most of his problems. He redeemed himself, though.

I don't know that you can necessarily pin it as a story between one or the other, but if I have to choose I'd say Tristan.

There's plenty of blame to go around. Tristan strung Susannah out like a bad crack addict with his letters and waited far too long to tell her to let their relationship go. Alfred was a large catalyst of the issues between Susannah and the brothers because of his jealousy. And Susannah herself knew when she settled with Alfred that she was still in love with Tristan.
I think the only one who was purely above any responsibility was Samuel.

One Stab's summary of Susannah:
"She was like the water that freezes inside a rock and breaks it apart. It was no more her fault than it is the fault of the water when the rock shatters."

I never really liked this movie, because like someone else said, Tristan was a selfish douche. It reminds me a lot of the story fo the Prodigal Son, who was also a douche.
Random trivia, I've canoed past the famous rock in this movie. It's on the Buffalo River in northern Arkansas.

Anyone else find it odd that One Stab can't speak English in the movie, but he narrates the movie in English?

He understands it perfectly well, just wouldn't lower himself to speak it. This is what Alfred told Susannah

I never even thought this to be an option for deciding if the movie was about her. I mean, it doesn't end on her death and all the retribution at the end does not concern her.
It's funny, I never seem to catch the beginning of this movie when it's on, always seems to be after the War.

At the beginning, you see Tristan as a boy (as told by One Stab) fighting the bear that he fights again at the end of the movie. It all comes full circle, which is why I think it's more about Tristan than Susannah.
