Colbert is going to transform the genre.

That was the smartest Late Night show I've ever seen.

Is that the lead singer from St. Paul and the Broken Bones?

That's the lead singer for St. Paul and the Broken Bones. He's got a hell of a voice.

That's what I thought. St. Paul and the Broken Bones are amazing.

Lead singer from the Alabama Shakes.

Aloe Blacc.

This song was chosen to send a message.

Colbert is going to try and cut through the pretense and fluff and bring people together by making them laugh. This won't be that different from The Colbert Show overall. He won't be the faux Conservative, but he will get his point across all sideways.

Looking forward to it.

You didn't get what he was doing. It's okay. You'll get it soon. You're a smart guy.

Not sure why this is hard to see. Ferguson had some great shows. I take it back. He did a lot of that kind of thing.

He wasn't knee slapping silly. He took a different angle. What is wrong with that?

He did a good job.

Solid first show. It felt a lot like the Colbert Report. Stephen has some things to work on but he will do fine.

I guess I'm spoiled by The Roots but I wasn't impressed with his band.

Really, this show should capitalize on the interviewing skills. Kimmel and Conan are good at getting their guests to loosen up and do fun things, and Jimmy is just there to play party games with them. But Colbert is probably one of the 10 best interviewers alive. He, Stewart, and Oliver are all pretty incredible at doing good interviews.

I'm really shocked that Colbert is the first Daily Show alumni to be recruited for a network late night talk show. You know they can interview people, are very quick on their feet, and are better than rehearsed sketch comedy. I don't know what from Fallon's and Meyers' previous background shows they can interview people worth a damn. I think Rob Cordry and Ed Helms could have held down late night shows quite well, and if it weren't for Lorne's loyalty to his alum, I think one of the Daily Show anchors would have had a show before Colbert.

Yeah. He has always been a great interviewer. That set up of Bush with his brother was classic Colbert.

I am not crazy about his politics as I am on the other side of things, but if I have to watch a Liberal (and that is almost all that is on TV), I want to watch a smart one. And, his Catholicism keeps him grounded, at least.

People missed what he was doing with the amulet and Oreos. I thought it was good. He'll get better.

Really surprised at how negative everyone was here.

While I'm not a fan of Fallon's, I have to concede that he has the best house band ever for a late night show. He struck gold with them as far as music is concerned, although I think Max Weinstein and Labamba are close in terms of entertainment value.

Great first show.

The Oreo bit was just downright hilarious.

What's it like to go through life with no sense of humor? Does it hurt?

Do people really give this many fricks about a late show?

This was an ok first show. The highlight was the interview with Jeb Bush where Colbert looked like he finally got back into his comfort zone.

Meh - I've seen him do that bit like 50 times on the Report. Hell, half of the .GIF memes of Colbert on the net are of him eating and hamming it up with food/props. How can you guys think that's so witty or clever?

And the TRUMP jokes were seriously very stale and unfunny - not being a poor sport but literally "Morning Joe" has more current and funny TRUMP jokes than that.

He'll likely grow into the slot but man oh man Conan would have been a no brainer, especially the legacy of he and Dave both being former NBC employees who were screwed out of "The Tonight Show" by NBC. Made too much sense not to happen. Colbert would have been much better sliding to the Daily Show.

I actually prefer his Colbert Report schtick to his real persona

You know what this is, it took me a bit to realize and it was before my time but this is 1980s Letterman - back when he wasn't stuck in a run but instead breaking new ground.

I thought it was hilarious.

That was his first show out the gate.

He's got some funny bits, he's sharp. All of shite jokes have multiple levels. It was good.

And I agree. If that's his first shot at it, he'll only get better.

No idea why all the hate here. The oreo skit was funny, the sabra skit was funny. The interviews were pretty good.
