The boy would starve to death if he couldn’t make a sandwich out of it.

The Jerk - Dec 1979
The Blues Brothers - June 1980
Caddy shack - July 1980
Arguably three of the greatest comedies ever within a few months of each other. What a glorious time.

But the woke pc crowd has largely memoryholed it.
Nobody memoryholed it. Every single movie, from the past, that comes up people say the same old crap "you could never make that today" woke this, woke that. It's so stupid. I think the "anti woke" crowd bitches about stuff more than the "woke crowd" these days. It's annoying.

Late 70s early 80s had to be peak American culture. Best movies, best music, best cars. There will never be an era as good as that. I think it was the good drugs at the time
I just wonder what happened to that level of creativity. Something changed. People just don’t have that kind of creativity and individuality anymore everything today is so bland and corporate

Sorry. HATED this flick. Premise. Steve Martin's schtick.
True story:
My GF and another couple at the time went to the theater. Both 'The Jerk' and first 'Star Trek' movie were playing simultaneously.
I was out-voted by the other three parties and we started watching 'The Jerk' in a sparsely attended theater. It was so stupid, I walked out after 15 minutes straight into 'Star Trek' (had to sit in the front row -- theater was packed to the gills.) GREAT decision.
I eventually did watch 'The Jerk'. Confirmed: Cringe and STILL dumb.

The Jerk had some laughs, but Steve Martin isnt funny, never has been.
And he should be garroted to death for what he did to the Pink Panther movies.

Just curious, what are your favorite comedies? I don't have much of a sense of humor, but I thought The Jerk was great.

Found your answer. Growing corporate influence strangles creativity. And when you wed corporate money to social agendas it extinguishes creativity.

I'm surprised that someone who doesn't believe in space would like Star Trek

Ever seen All of Me? Martin does some of the best physical comedy in his movies that I’ve seen from a contemporary American actor. Not saying I like everything he does, but he’s a pretty talented guy.
