just to clarify, our flag means death is just gay pirates to be edgy and gay. no redeeming value.

black sails has a gay guy and he's well written and acted character amongst a host of other great straight and often naked (if that's your thing) characters.

avoid Our Flag Means Death if you just don't want an overly gay agenda,

do not avoid Black Sails if you don't mind a single character being gay with a very good story.

there's some steamy lesbian scenes and nudity in the first couple of episodes. guess you wouldn't be interested in that gayness either.

In addition. It’s been a little while since I’ve seen it but the only intimate scenes that he has are with ms barrow correct?

As someone who is definitively on the conservative side on this issue this was extremely non intrusive and did not take away from the story.

There’s two times that I roll my eyes and avoid the show from there on.

1. A show marketed to kids.

Black sails is not a show marketed to kids to say the least

2. When it doesn’t fit with the narrative arc of the story.

IE the last of us with Ron Swanson. Essentially an entire episode was devoted to give one scene for a character that minimally advanced the story. To me felt shoved in for no purpose.

In black sails it gave legitimate backstory and history to the main character and a source for his anger due to a societal reaction that might would have occurred at that time.

There was one scene that was a few seconds long where they kissed. But as far as sex, no. They only showed him intimate with women.

couldn't have put it better.

i never understand how to put it well.

"yes there's a gay dude. yes, him being gay is a bit of a plot device. yes, no it's not "woke." no it's not shoehorned in. yes, you are pulling for the gay dude."

so.... gay pirates?

To that point about the rooting interest-it’s something that flint earned over the course of 2 seasons at that point.

They didn’t drop it in episode 1 to be your primary motivation for rooting for him. They didn’t drop Flint in as a side character in the middle of the season and say “hey you should care about this guy because he’s homosexual or else you’re a homophobe”

You root for the character because at least to that point he seems like a level headed antihero fighting a corrupt establishment

This gave him personal motivation to be against the establishment

agree, but why you gotta disrespect the world's greatest game? yes, women's soccer is gay, but so are all women's sports.

So now that we’ve thoroughly debated the merits of LGBTQ representation in the show…

S1, E8 (Season Finale)

frick Gates
frick Dufrense

Headed into S2.

I enjoy the fleshing out of Flint’s character in this season. Like seeing him as a younger man, before his world gets turned upside down.

I’m pretty sure many of the Pirates of Penzance were gay.

I’m catching up.

frick Dufresne for sure. I feel bad for Gates though. Billy was a son to him and there is only so much you can take.

I think episode 4 was my favorite of season 1. The one where they moored the ship to clean the barnacles. Particularly Silver cooking the pig. The first three episodes introduced the players but this one sets the stage for everything to come.

Randall is season 1 MVP.

It’s a prequel to Treasure Island that combines characters from the book and real pirates/locations from history. Perfect show from start to finish. Just incredibly under-watched because Starz didn’t promote it. It’s available on Prime with a Starz subscription, but the first episode is free without the subscription if you want to check it out.
