Breaking bad was very good but it isn’t nearly as complex as The Sopranos. It lacks any real humor

Spot on, for me. For Breaking Bad I recognize the quality but the total lack of humor and lack of likable characters wore on me.

Just finished watching Sopranos from start to finish. Really enjoyable. Had watched many episodes at first airing but never all of them in order.

One thing that struck me in the end was how small Tony’s crew was and how easily the whole family was destroyed by the NY guys, Phil’s death notwithstanding.

Throughout the seasons we well knew most of these mobsters were old dudes and there was always a sense of the world moving on from them and their way. But at the same time I assumed there must be a bunch of street level foot soldiers in the background making their operations happen. After all, a story can only focus on so many guys at one time and we were only seeing the captains and bosses and made men.

But when it came to the end, there was nobody else. Holed up in the hideaway house while being hunted, it was Tony and his few mostly-old friends. They had an AR and some pistols—less firepower than many regular suburban dads I know. And that was it.

The beauty of The Sopranos is not necessarily the storyline. It's the characters. If you aren't drawn into the characters on the show, I don't know what to tell you.

It's the greatest show ever.

ABSOLUTELY.

I'm doing another watch through now. I've done more watch throughs than I care to admit, but you're right. It's amazing the little subtle things you pick up with each watch through and I think to myself "how in the hell did I not pick up on that earlier?"

It amazes me that I used to hate Livia back when I watched it the first time through years ago. Now, I'm amazed at how much I enjoy her character in the show.

shite, I could go on and on about The Sopranos.

Did ya'll know Philly Leotardo did 20 years in the can?

He compromised. He ate grilled cheese off a rad-e-ator. He also jacked off into a tissue.

There are some incredible video essays on youtube that really highlight the layers this show has. It will also really hammer home that the ending is way more than most people thought it was.

In reality, I think Carmine Sr. was right, the Sopranos were a glorified crew. IF you look at real life, most of the 5 families had NJ factions in North Jersey, even the Philadelphia family had North Jersey factions. The Luccesse's had one and Gaspipe Casso basically went to war with that crew and caused mayhem and alot of them were murdred, flipped or switched over to his side.
While Tony is the "Boss" he's more like a captain in Carmine's family in reality, that they allow to think he is in charge while they manipulate him for their percentage of the Jersey business. Not to mention Tony personally killed so many guys close to him that when it was mattress time he was almost alone.

In hindsight, it's really struck me as an end-of-an-era story like The Wild Bunch or something.

You have a few old guys clinging to the old ways and "this thing of ours." You have Silvio imagining he's some kind of Tom Hagen, acting as consigliere to "Tha Boss" while they run around strip clubs and construction sites.

And it's set after the big 5 family trials and the Gotti trial, when nobody really trusted each other or had the muscle they used to.

yeah definitely an element of that in the entire series. Especially in the first few episodes where Tony is lamenting about coming in at the end, after the good days. Which Melfi adds that "many Americans feel that way." which is sort of true, this theme sort of transcends the mafia part of the show.

or Tony Egg. in all seriousness though, I saw a recent interview with Tony Sirico (Paulie walnuts) and he has Alzheimer's or something and appears to be sort of losing his mind. Really sad but I couldn't help think to myself, "T, you give this guy a golf club he'll probably try to frick it."

I just finished as well, and while I really liked it, in my mind it's nowhere near Breaking Bad for best series ever, and I love mob movies/shows.

Like everyone else, I rewatched the final episode to try and pick up some of the symbolism. I assume all of the song titles he scrolled past had some meaning, as did "Don't Stop Believing", but I'm sure I missed a ton.

Based on this thread, the assumption is that he got shot in the restaurant? I assumed the door dinging was Meadow coming in...is that not true? Was the guy who went in the bathroom the killer? Was the all black at the end Tony getting killed and therefore no longer seeing anything/conscious?

ETA: One of the reasons I think I place it below BB is that by and large, the acting in The Sopranos was pretty shitty once you get outside of a few people (Tony, Carmela, Meadow to name some).
