I for one am looking forward to this take on the Joker.

quote:

Todd Phillips’ Joker movie will compete for one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry it was revealed today, with the film playing in the main competition at the Venice film festival.

quote:

Speaking at the Rome press conference announcing the line-up, Venice’s festival director Alberto Barbera justified the film’s inclusion as a contender for the Golden Lion prize, saying Joker is ‘darker than The Dark Knight and it’s Phoenix at the height of his powers.’

quote:

Still, it’s a very, very good sign in terms of the movie’s general quality level - Suicide Squad may have won an Oscar, but it wasn’t nominated for a Golden Lion, which is generally considered to be a solid predictor for Academy Award glory, with last year’s winner, Roma, going on to do quite well.

Assuming the leaked script that has been floating around for a while now is real, it definitely doesn't pull any punches. The audience reaction to this film is going to be fun.

Yeah, read this other article yesterday

quote:

She and artistic director Cameron Bailey were especially impressed by three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix’s all-stops-out performance in DC’s “Batman” spin-off “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips. “It’s an original story, not part of the existing canon,” Bailey said. “It does take the character and a lot of the elements that we know from Joker’s backstory. But it’s an original story that allows the filmmakers to go in an original direction. It’s got some real dark tones to it, but it’s just grounded in this career-best career performance by Joaquin Phoenix. I think all the awards bodies will be taking notice.”

What's darker than being dark?

ICE DARK.

I think this is the first time I don't care that the character is a completely new take. Usually, I'd complain about changing source material.

We'll see how much I care if it ends up sucking.

If the leaked script is real, it’s gonna be too much for some people to stomach.

I have no idea what the story is, (and don't wanna know before I see the movie) but The Joker has always been completely insane and liked hurting/killing people.

In today's movie culture I'm curious what would be too much to stomach.

Darker than Joker cutting his face off and stapling it in on as a mask? Harley getting dumped in a basement full of other dead Harley’s?

Mindfricking Tim Drake through torture until he’s Joker lite? Killing Jason?

Depends what audience you think will see it I guess.

The absolute gore porn of those shitty Saw movies already has R rates movie goers desensitized to brutal acts of violence.

Budget is way too small for it to bomb. Opening Weekend will be big, but I think legs will be weak. I've also read the script, and while I enjoyed it, I think the GA might not. This is not going to be a fun film.
