"Joker" mirrors "Rocky" in many ways.

The film “Joker” is often compared to “Taxi Driver” for obvious reasons, but I see many similarities between “Joker” and “Rocky.”

Both are living in the gutter in big cities that look like dumps (the films are set a mere five years apart).

They dream of rising from these circumstances in search of significance. Arthur toils away on the comedy circuit and Rocky takes small-time fights for pocket change.

Rocky and Joker awkwardly go about courting the women in their lives, Adrian and Sophia.

Stairs are of great significance in both films: Rocky ascends stairs to show he’s become the man he longed to be; the Joker walks down stairs to get the same point across.

Rocky makes it to the grand stage against Apollo Creed and kills it; Joker makes it to the late night stage with Murray and, well, kills it. In the aftermath, both become heroes to the downtrodden.

Am I making something out of nothing here, or do y’all see it too?

I saw it as the crowd laughing at him not with him.

I was implying that he literally kills Murray. He finally achieved his dream of appearing on the show and boy howdy did he make an impression...

Rocky is a great movie.

Joker isn't anything special.

Agreed. Was really disappointed in it when I finally saw it. I'm not sure why it is so lauded around here.

I would definitely call these similarities superficial.

We can probably find some other dissimilar movies that prominently feature stairs. Dredd? Parasite? The Untouchables? I'm sure Todd Phillips has plans to rip off that last one at some point in the future.

Did joke really court Sophia? If I remember them dating was in his head.

I watched it on HBO about a month ago. Half way through it I could not watch it anymore. It was very slow pace and disappointing. Even before that it did not hold my attention. Never cared to see how it ended.
As far as OP, no it does not “mirror” Rocky. Rocky had no ambition to be the world heavyweight champion. He enjoyed being a “muscle” for the mob guy. Micky complained about his work ethic. He trained using only the tools he had access to. After the fight, he did not care to have another fight with Apollo. Apollo was the one who came seeking him in both movies.

I think you hit on some pretty good points.

I liked the use of stairs in both - good catch.

I guess if you break down movies to their basic components, you can find similarities in all sorts of areas. I'm not sure I'd have used ' mirror ', but there are some notable comparisons.

Joker mirrors Godzilla... ?

No.

There are literally countless films with this same story.

quote:

Rocky and Joker awkwardly go about courting the women in their lives, Adrian and Sophia.

Which all include this story too.

I mean, maybe your only place, but all films will use "something" as a physical representation of character progression.

quote:

Rocky makes it to the grand stage against Apollo Creed and kills it; Joker makes it to the late night stage with Murray and, well, kills it. In the aftermath, both become heroes to the downtrodden.

Super big stretch. Rocky becomes a hero to everyone, honestly. Who doesn't love his story. The Joker becomes a hero to criminals, not the "downtrodden." No one looks to someone who killed a person on live television as a hero unless they are a psychopath.

Fantasizing about a woman in your mind is not courting her. If that’s the case, Danica McKellar and I have been in a relationship over the years.

I mean what you discussed was the Hero's journey...with some stairs. Almost every "Hero"(Used loosely here) movie has a similar theme. Just with some stairs.

quote:

Rocky and Joker awkwardly go about courting the women in their lives, Adrian and Sophia.

Joker didn't court Sophia. He had stalked her and had a psychotic fantasy that they were in a relationship. Wouldn't call it awkward as much and criminal trespassing and stalking.
