Waititi's story was that he wasn't planning on playing Hitler, but was having trouble finding someone that would take the role. Ironic that a Jew ended up playing Hitler.

This is one of those movies just gets better and better everytime you watch it.

I’m doing it boys. I’m dragging this thread back to the top. Hate to do it, but it’s got to be done.

I just rewatched Jojo Rabbit and I still love it.

On the second watch, I think I appreciated the Hitler character for what he is even more. His speech to Jojo deep into the film after Jojo has fallen in love with the girl is very well done. The actor’s gesticulations and facial expressions are perfect.

Also, Sam Rockwell’s character is more obvious on the second watch but still quite well done. There’s so much going on when you first view the movie that his “dissident attitude” and alternative life style remain more cloaked until the end.

I just highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn’t seen it.

Finally got around to watching this and absolutely loved it. One of the best movies I've seen the last decade or more.

Also, Saint Alfonzo's takes in this thread-yikes.

I enjoyed it.

How a kid idolizes a person like Hitler in that time period then grows up to see 'the other side' is a key element of growing up.

Plus, those shoes.

Damn.

*FunkyTide8 - damn, that's one heck of a zombie thread reanimation on your part.

Aren’t you the same poster who got worked up over American History X?

I’m noticing a trend with the movies you dislike…

Probably the all time worst take on a film in the history of this board.

Movie is great.

some of the folks that really liked this movie when this thread was started probably hate it now due to Taika being "woke" now should be fun to go sort that out. Hell SEK was arguing that Taika ruined the Thor franchise a few months back despite him having created the highest rated Thor movie.

This ^, you moron (I’m talking to Saint Alfonzo). You forced him to reveal a mild spoiler point to wash away your stench opinion.

It’s actually a very interesting and intelligent take on the nazi phenomenon. Here’s a glimpse at how very bad ideologies get perpetuated and enforced on societies by manipulation of the youth.

A wise viewer can see parallels to the indoctrination of any ideology in any time period, including the madness of crowds (to borrow a phrase from a Douglas Murray) that we are seeing today.

this is a really good post

I understand it completely, it's just a stupid premise for a movie. Perfect for the short attention span hipster douchebags that think it's a good film. A prepubesent wet dream for the totalitarian SJW Nazi inside every one of you.

so you didn't understand it?

You can separate an artist from his work. Like I hate Rob Reiner, but god damn are the Princess Bride and This Is Spinal Tap great movies.

Mel Gibson is normally my go to example for this

Roman Polanski as well. Like he’s a despicable evil human being, but god damn can he make a good movie.

This is also why I don’t think I have Woody Allen Derangement Syndrome in thinking that all of his movies fricking suck because Polanski is on the same moral level he is and I like Polanski’s movies. Woody Allen is easily the most overrated filmmaker of all time, and I don’t think it’s close.

No I still love JoJo and What We Do….we watch at least once every few months, total masterpiece. But Taika’s last few works makes me wonder if it’s possible for him to remove his professional work from his personal stuff.

Off his last few works, imagine what he would have done with What We Do…now.

One of the best movies in the past 10 years or so for me. I’m kind of baffled by just how bad Saint Alonzo’s take is on this. I guess he was just like yea this is a hill I’m going to die on. This movie is about as perfect as you’re going to get these days.

As much as I love Jojo Rabbit and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, he really pissed me off with Next Goal Wins. Movie was sold as a feel good, funny soccer movie. Trailer, IMDb description, everything tells you that’s what it is. Take my 10 year old nephew to see it in theaters and turns out it’s mainly just about the hardship of a trans transitioning while trying to be eligible for the team. The big “emotional” moment of the movie came when the trans had a breakdown in the locker room because he/she had to get off hormone pills to qualify for the team.

You want to make that movie, fine. But don’t trick your audience and show them something different than what’s advertised. Would not have paid money to see that and definitely wouldn’t have taken a kid.

No one has ever misunderstood a movie more than St. Alfonzo did Jojo Rabbit.
