This is one of those phrases that just excuses people who are chronic frickups. And it is mostly used for entertainers and celebrities. You don't hear people say, "Bob the Plumber has a lot of internal demons." Nope, Bob is just a frickup who drinks too much and can't pay his mortgage.

People absolutely say that about Bob the Plumber if he ends up killing himself or getting arrested, or doing something else nefarious or bad

I'm interested in who else he ends up separating from - did Seth Meyers put him on his show to clean him up or is he an addict/enabler? Pete Davidson? Nick Kroll? Pete Holmes? Mike Birbiglia?
Regardless, if you stay sober on the road for 10 years but 9 months at home with your wife puts you off the wagon, it's probably not the best sign your relationship is healthy and working.
