EXCLUSIVE: With Clayface still shapeshifting his way through theaters — to over $90M worldwide, so far — DC Studios has tapped Francis Galluppi to pen a John Constantine movie for the studio, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for DC declined to comment. We understand the project is in very early development; there aren’t yet other attachments that we’re aware of. This comes ahead of the release of Evil Dead Wrath, the seventh installment in the iconic horror franchise, which marks Galluppi’s entrée into studio filmmaking.

Nicknamed Hellblazer, John Constantine debutee in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 in 1985. The character, created by writer Alan Moore and artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben, is a working-class British detective with expertise in magic and the occult and a penchant for the grift.

Galluppi is an American filmmaker whose Evil Dead film is based on an original story that he developed and brought to franchise creator Sam Raimi and team in 2024, as we first reported. The filmmaker caught heat off of his debut feature, the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, which released through Well Go USA Entertainment after premiering to critical acclaim at at Fantastic Fest

Awwww man. This might be top of the list of characters I don't want James Gunn to touch.

I doubt it. Knowing Gunn, this will be a recast

This is akin to trying to remake The Godfather.

Listen to Gunn’s latest podcast. The man is legitimately an imbecile.

Man. John Constantine is probably my favorite comic book character and as much as I’d like to see him brought to screen again (Keanu’s movie was good but they just didn’t get the character right) I don’t want Gunn anywhere near this.

I would rather a good TV series than a movie. The one that was on NBC for few episodes 10-15 years ago enjoyable but just couldn’t quite hit the mark.

My gosh. Unbelievable for someone who thinks this way to be in charge of DC Comics movies.

Whatever you may have thought about the quality of the Arrowverse, Matt Ryan absolutely nailed Constantine. He also voiced him in multiple DC animated movies. He embodies the character. He's a little older at 45 but I don't think it'd be a problem to have a Constantine who's already been around for a while and been through some stuff.

I don’t have problem with that, movies are subjective. It doesn't surprise me that he doesn't like them. We know what Gunns style is, and it's the opposite of Nolan

You and James Gunn might be the only two people on the planet that think this.

Arguably the greatest super hero movie ever made.

Give this to Guillermo del Toro.

The last thing that I want is DC's occult characters being turned into whacky punchlines. I don't want a Hellblazer movie with walk-on roles for silly versions of Deadman and Etrigan the Demon.

No one who thinks like that about Batman Begins should be anywhere close to making decisions for the entirety of DC Comics movies.
