There's a movie from years ago with Burt Lancaster playing Thorpe that starts out with him as a young kid living on a reservation and then heading off to Carlisle School for Indians for his education and how he excelled in all manner of sport.
Personally, I feel he was the greatest athlete to ever live considering his many accomplishments in varying sports.

A close friend of mines Mom lived next door to Jim Thorpe in Akron, Ohio.
I remember her telling us when she was a little kid she used to sit on his knee as he would bounce her up and down. This was back in the late 60’s, early 70’s when she told us this.
Wish I could go back and ask her more questions.
Thorpe was a complete freak.

My first-grade school report on an athlete. Perhaps the greatest pure athlete that's graced the planet.

I read all about Thorpe (Bright Path) years ago. He was on another level for his day, but the racial angle this doc goes for is way overblown.

I don't understand. Why isn't he black?

Much of the TD crowd would not stand for such casting these days. They get worked up over fictitious characters, even cartoon, being played by persons of a different race. Having a white guy play an actual Native American hero would generate 30 pages. Not to mention Lancaster played the Native American lead in Apache (1954).
Thank goodness times have changed. If Roots had been made in the 50s, they would have had Robert Blake playing Kunta Kinte.

How about John Wayne playing Genghis Khan-----that was horrible casting.
Also, Warner Oland, a Swedish/American playing Chinese detective Charlie Chan.
