ETA: it's now official

“His love of the franchise. He’s a wonderful filmmaker. I think he also has a relationship with Harrison. It was all of the right pieces coming together, at the right time.” I must agree with Mr. Marshall — I think Mangold is an expert at twisting old-fashioned genres and tropes with just enough postmodern intrigue to result in comforting yet challenging Hollywood movies. And for those who are still worried about Spielberg’s exit, fear not: “Steven is staying on as a producer, so we’ve got the best of everything.”

After a long development process, Steven Spielberg is handing the directing reins on “Indiana Jones 5” to another filmmaker for the first time in the franchise’s 39-year history, Variety has learned.
Sources say, while a deal hasn’t closed, “Ford v Ferrari” director James Mangold is in talks to take the job. Mangold has been put in this situation before when he took over the “Wolverine” franchise; 2017’s “Logan” was a blockbuster, grossing $619 million globally, and earning Mangold an Oscar nomination for adapted screenplay.

I'd be ok with that. Mangold has a solid track record, and Crystal Skull showed that Spielberg and Lucas aren't flawless with Indy.
I just want a good, entertaining movie, and both Logan and Ford v Ferrari were good, well made movies.

For those who are too lazy to look up what all he has done

Indiana is a slave on the run chasing after a secret crest to free his family. Can he outrun the Confederate army? Find out this summer in... Indiana Jones and the Crest of the Fallen.

Meh. They would be a damned near 1960. Unless it is going to be, "Trey Jones and the Hunt for Nazis" which would be boring AF, they should do a reboot back to the original period - or even further back - 20-something Indy just after WWI and do some Lovecraftian stuff set in the 1920s.
THAT would be a reboot.

ill forever maintain that Crystal Skull had a very good Indiana Jones feel, especially considering how long after the last one it had been. where Crystal Skull screwed up imo is that they used aliens and had a weird plot. The acting and directing were fine, music fine....terrible ending. Even the skulls were fine if it just wasnt alien related.

So some really good movies
Kate & Leopold was good, Walk the line, Wolverine, 3:10 to Yuma...
then there was Knight and Day...that was terrible

The alien part could have been fine had they not gone with a lazy CG fest and the "knowledge is too much I'm gonna die now" light show at the end.
The alien as a Stan Winston-esque physical monster living in the ship that they need to escape from or the ancient ship actually being the "alien" and trying to assimilate Indy and company kind of like the Borg or the computer in Superman 3 could have worked just fine.
Hell, if they have gone the evil super computer route they could have even brought in the US gov't using what tech remained after Indy destroys the ship to spur the massive jump in our own computer technology as a coda sort of like in the ending of Raiders where the Ark gets put in storage.

Been done already. Young Indy movies were fantastic. No reason to revisit the 20s.
