In 2004, they operated close to 9,100 stores and employed 84,300 people. 13 years later there are only 10 stores left open and most of those are in Alaska. I got to feeling nostalgic just now, remembering back to those Friday nights I would walk into our local Blockbuster, searching for that perfect movie to watch for the weekend. High speed internet changed the game but I do miss socializing with other teens while hunting for a movie to watch back in the day.

13 years? That is a long time. I'm surprised they still have 10 stores though.

Right now an exec is probably drinking a whiskey wishing they had pushed forward with the purchase of Netflix.

At it's peak (around 2003 / 2004) Blockbuster seemed unstoppable. As dominant as Netflix is right now, will it have a downfall in the distant future?

I expect so.

It pioneered the streaming service, but I think a lot of companies are pulling their stuff out now and starting their own. I think Netflix will have run it's course within 5 yrs

Thinking about blockbuster brings about the exact same nostalgia for me.

For some weird reason, Abercrombie and Fitch makes me nostalgic as well.

Netflix built up such a big subscriber base, I think they can weather the storm of networks pulling their material, since Netflix has turned around and put like $7 billion into creating original content, which will offset losing the ‘rented’ content.

I don’t think individual networks will be able to survive the costs of doing it on their own. Streaming services have become very saturated and people are near their breaking point for how many things they’re willing to purchase.

Netflix needs to start purchasing these networks and their content outright.

Nah. Netflix reinventing itself as an original content creater that is supplemented by other stuff will keep it going.

I think that is exactly what will happen.

They won’t get the revenue for the older stuff that Netflix was willing to pay for it.

So eventually, Netflix will start to get it back.

It’ll never be like the heyday a decade ago though.
