i think its my favorite movie of all.

It might be mine, as well.

Which puzzles me, after trying to get a co-worker, and later, a family member to watch it for the first time, who both hated it. Admittedly, they both have simple minds, as they would rather watch Freddie Got Fingered or Attack Force over IAWL, but to come away hating it? It just makes no sense.

With the younger people in the family we will normally watch the color version. For some reason it ends up being much better received than the b&w version.

Still a stretch to say he “stole” anything from George.

Sesame Street swears up and down they never stole the best friends names of Bert and Ernie from It's A Wonderful Life. They can shove a newel post right up their arse for ripping off George Bailey and his buddies.

It was the first film Stewart made after returning from fighting in the Second World War. The man had severe PTSD and you can see it in some of the scenes he has. Even his fellow cast members noticed that something was "off" in the early going of production. I believe Stewart credited this film with helping him return to a setting one might consider "normal."

A great mainstream film that established Capra as an iconic filmmaker.

IAWL basically ended Capra’s career as an important director.

It’s a decent movie, but far from perfect. Stewart and Reed in particular nail their roles, but the screenplay has multiple sequences that are stupidly on the nose. It’s like Schoolhouse Rock of life lessons.

For 1946 I would say it's pound for pound, all else equal, pretty g-damn perfect overall. Little things like when George tells a drunk Uncle Billy to choose the hat in the middle. 40 years later, Rocky series steals this with "hit the one in the middle." And there are thousands more. Hell Christmas Vacation didn't even try to hide it from Rusty watching the ending to Chevy's classic boss rant to chain sawing the newel post etc. Sorry, it was the perfect movie by the greatest male lead of all time.

Uncle Billy is an eccentric moron and cornpone fake dumbass that encapsulates what prevents me from thinking the movie is great. Americans aren’t eccentric. That’s an English gig.

This year was the first time we watched the colorized version, the digitization and colors made it even better.

What...?

Jimmy Stewart would disagree

We just finished it as we do every Christmas Eve. My 17 year old said “Man that movie is just perfect”. Then as always I made them watch the SNL list ending.

It really needed some ending for Potter. He just steals $8k and that’s it. I read they thought about an ending where he died and went to hell and an ending where he considered returning the money and then showed up to the ending celebration and then felt like shite and left. Something needed to happen there.

I love the movie and just recently started making it a tradition to watch it every year now. This was the first year where I started to tear up a little. I'm 42 and the end scene really hit me this year.

Marlo Thomas was a a version called It Happened One Christmas with Wayne Rogers and Cloris Leachman as Clara, the angel. I haven't seen it in years, but I'd like to. I recall it was a very well done version. I watched It's a Wonderful Life yesterday afternoon in between family Christmas events with my Mom. Watch it every year.

Frank Capra's lost ending to IAWL.

Yeah, it's disappointing that he got away with the money without direct consequences.
