Comedy can't make fun of the sane people of the world. It's pointing out the insane that makes comedy so funny.

SNL has this backwards. They rarely call out the left which is insane right now.

In 48 seasons there have been about 8 that were funny. It is exceptionally bad right now, but the black lesbian from New Orleans made me laugh a few times on weekend update.

The Steve Martin Martin Short episode was good.

It's more miss than hit thought and usually depends on who the host is if it's going to have a chance.

The best thing they have going is when Che and Jost write racist jokes for each other to tell

As Conan O'Brian has said, the last good SNL era was the one you grew up watching...And that one was probably not as good as you remembered it either.

Said he's heard some version of the complaint in the OP since he started writing in 88. Said he was told countless times how the good SNL ended with Murray, then was told by slightly younger people the best years ended when Dana and Myers left, then it was Sandler/Farley, then Ferrell, on and on.

Personally it's always been a show to me that is best viewed through a "best of" compilation cause most of the skits are shite on a week to week basis, and the majority of hosts hurt instead of help the show.

They really do.

The best hosts are the ones that really buy in, but then it also takes having actual talent and comedic timing.

John Goodman, Alex Baldwin, Justin Timberlake, John Hamm, Tom Hanks are among the best hosts since I've been watching as a kid. Even Peyton Manning deserves some praise as a host, while not being super polished he at least dove in head first. Some hosts can't even be bothered to do that.

I think Conan and Bob Odenkirk repeatedly have said the best hosts were the comedians like Steve Martin(for obvious reasons) and a few celebrities that buy in and are up for anything like Danny Devito or Tom Hanks. Said it was a real chore with some hosts cause they just have no comedic personality, veto everything, and cant take a joke. So the skits arent just awkward(and not in the funny way), but they are creative drains to try and write for. Cause you might be up til 2am and hit on this perfect sketch, but then in rehearsal the host throws it out cause they think it doesn't project the right fake image they want, and so what gets on air ends up being the boring shite that they know will bomb.

One of the funniest whole episodes of SNL was when Jim Carrey hosted. This was prolly about 20+ years ago or so. It was the one with the skit about him being a lifeguard at the jacuzzi. Basically every sketch was hilarious.

SNL isn't at its funniest, but it currently has great moments. They're in a transition year and have great prospects in the "featured" cast with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman. Chloe Fineman is money when they write to her impressions, Yang has great delivery, and Molly Kearney is one note but it's a funny, goofy shtick.

Please Don't Destroy delivers. Some weeks they're the best part of the show.

Jost and Che are strong as hell (it took them years to hit their stride).

SNL has always been liberal. They're soft on Biden just as they were soft on Obama, Clinton, and Carter. If Clinton hadn't have been such a horndog, he'd have had an easy ride with SNL.

If you compare this cast to the '80 cast before Eddie Murphy emerged, or the '85 "Hollywood" cast, it looks stellar. You just can't compare it (or most seasons) to the Chevy/Murray years or the early 90's and expect it to hold up.

Haven't watched for decades. It a show that ebs and flows. Every now and then they get a cast that's funny and has good chemistry. Early cast was great, then it dipped, then Eddie came and it hit again, then it dipped, then Hartman and cast came and it hit, then it dipped, then Rock/Sandler/Spade/Farley hit, then it dipped, then Ferrel and crew hit, then it dipped. A lot of it has to do with casting. They have to be able to act/be funny plus write funny scripts on there own in a few days for the next show. It's not easy to do. I'm sure it will hit again in the future.
Honestly I think most people watch now to bitch and get offended.
Also they have made fun of EVERY sitting president. Most could take it and didn't have fragile egoes....

The past 4 years of SNL have been the worst the show has ever been. The downturn started in 2016 and has only gotten worse.

I enjoyed pretty much all the 90s SNL. I didn't like the early to mid 00's much but it picked back up after the Digital Shorts started. IMO, SNL 2010-2014 is one of the best era's and casts the show has ever had.

It's pretty terrible and the talent isn't on par with the cast of the 80's or 90's that most of us grew up watching. Hell even the 2000's had some talent but today most of them are not funny at all.

It was good in the early years (Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, Garrett Morris, Chevy Chase). It was good in the late 80s/early 90s (Dana Carvey, Mike Meyers, Ellen Cleghorne, Chris Farley). Otherwise it's been unfunny.

Late 90’s/early 00’s crew was also great. Will Ferrell’s era

This is fact.
The problem: somehow simply the name “Trump” or a vague mannerism of his + negative connotation got the audience rolling. And it was even funny the first time. The second time less so. But they didn’t change the gag or expand on it. It’s a true waste.

The funniest trump bit was when everyone wished he would lose then admitted they would have no idea what to talk about if he did. It was a pretty decent bit. I thought they may be maturing and moving forward a little.

But then it went right back to “ TRUMP IS BAD, RIGHT?!?” Followed by raucous laughter from whoever actually attends that performance.

The highs haven’t been at peaks in several years. There are plenty of skits that fall flat that are pretty in line with all time lows. I think the laughs per minute it pretty near its lows. They usually have one decent skit a show. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a musical guest on purpose.

Not sure if you knew this but one of the guys in that group is Martin Herlihy. His dad is Tim Herlihy.

He wrote or co-wrote the Sandler films Billy Madison (1995), Happy Gilmore (1996), The Wedding Singer (1998), The Waterboy (1998), Big Daddy (1999) and Pixels (2015).

He is the jimmy fallon of his generation. Smiles in every sketch.
