Is SNL really bad now or is it just perception?

I'm not one of those people who thinks that SNL is supposed to be a laugh a minute and I'm supposed to be barrel laughing the whole time, but the two episodes I've seen this month were really underwhelming.
The first one earlier this month, I was thinking that Cecily Strong was carrying the whole show and without here it would be really bad, and then last night they announced that it was her last episode.
It's pretty bad.

It was good in the early years (Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, Garrett Morris, Chevy Chase).
It was good in the late 80s/early 90s (Dana Carvey, Mike Meyers, Ellen Cleghorne, Chris Farley).
Otherwise it's been unfunny.

They’ve had some funny skits over the past few years but mostly for me they’ve been meh to painfully unfunny

They seem to finally (trying to) getting cast members that are legitimately funny and letting the old weight go on their way.
I enjoy the skits with the new actors better.
Even Molly Kearney who this board is questionable about because gender stuff and they are a "they" has done a solid job on their rookie season.
I'd say my favorite cast members at the moment are Sarah Sherman, Michael Longfellow, and James Austin Johnson. HM for Chloe Fineman because some of her impressions are legitimately laugh out loud worthy such as her Jennifer Coolidge impression this week.

Their goal is clapter and it shows badly.

I think even in the glory years, most of the skits were weak, we just see the best ones from yesteryear. Most of the current ones aren’t very funny either, but some guest hosts can lift it higher. I don’t think overall it’s gotten any worse.

^^^I agree with this. A lot of it is nostalgia.Even if you go back and watch some of the most famous skits from the 90s – Wayne's World and all of the Sandler and Chris Farley stuff - some of them even fail in the moment.

It’s been pretty funny but people just like to complain.
Cecily Strong is officially out though so the show lost a powerhouse and this is just half a season after losing another powerhouse in McKinnon
In sports terms, they will be “rebuilding” for a few years. Other than Kenan they don’t have a solid male lead, and Fineman/Gardner are probably the strongest two female leads.
The dude who plays Trump is brilliant in that impression but he will probably need to step up his game to start carrying the load a bit

I do not think the writing is as nearly clever as it once was across all of TV, and SNL in particular. I get that Trump is a cartoon character but they leaned heavily on impersonating him for years and it’s gotten old. There just aren’t any clever or original ideas coming out of SNL, and a lot of it is internet meme/Gen Z humor that doesn’t appeal to the people who actually watch SNL.
I’m not one to defer to the response of “woke is killing everything” but political correctness is kryptonite for good comedy. You can’t be edgy anymore so funny characters that actually make people laugh are out the window. I’m sure there will be another Austin powers movie that will have to address the fact that he’s a womanizer and it will worsen the product.

Is terrible. Probably at the bottom of my list of current cast.

In the pre-social media days the political alignment of the cast members wasn't questioned or known, leading to a cast diverse in thought, which to me limits Groupthink to some extent and allows them to latch on to anything that might be funny. They were able to pick up and make fun of the 1990's PC movement, for instance (the movement that eventually spawned the movie PCU).
In the social media era, Shane Gillis was offered a role...then kicked right back out for something he said freeflow in a podcast. And while it's not surprising that Trump provided more "material worthy" moments than Obama (just given who they are), in the few episodes that I have watched they are treating Biden with kid gloves too.

I've always wondered how it's stayed on the air all these years. I'll watch it and laugh at some of it. I watched it in the 90s and some might not remember. There would be whole episodes where no one in the audience laughed.

Gerald Ford tripped and fell one time and it became a running gag on SNL. Chevy Chase did a fantastic job of playing up the idea of Ford as a bumbling idiot. If those writers from yesteryear were in the writer's room today, they would eviscerate Biden.

1991 was the apex combining late 80's with the new crowd.
Dana Carvey
Phil Hartman
Kevin Nealon
Jan Hooks
Victoria Jackson
Dennis Miller

Mike Meyers
Chris Farley
Tim Meadows
Rob Schneider
David Spade
Adam Sandler
OG cast and 70's gets the love but it was a way better show in the late 80's early 90's...that was its real golden age.

*The Not Ready for Prime Time Players were always about edgy, sketch comedy that wasn't exactly fit for standard network fare. I grew up on the original cast, and stuck around for a while as the guard passed from 1 season to the next.
It's been a very long time since I cared what SNL is doing.

The Keke Palmer was the best of the season. We really watch it for weekend update but I like Che.

Kenan Thompson is one of the worst cast members of all time. I will just never understand why he is so popular. He's awful in almost every single sketch he's in.

The late 90s early 00s cast was solid but 92-95 was my watching heyday.

I quit watching a few years ago. It had gotten to a point where I wouldn't even crack a smile watching the whole show.
