Speaking of Norton, where the hell has he been lately? Birdman and Moonrise Kingdom are the only notable things I remember him in over the last 10 years or so. Is he that much of a dick that no one wants to work with him?

Nobody has mentioned Clooney. His movies stand up against anyone else listed and he is only 14 years older. So still in Phoenixs generation..

Every time someone starts a thread called “[INSERT TITLE] is the best movie ever” or “[INSERT NAME] is the best actor in whatever,” they are always wrong

There's a larger age gap between Clooney and Phoenix than there is between Obama and Leonardo DiCaprio. Do you consider Obama and Leo to be from the same generation?

There’s a big difference between being in good movies and being one of the best actors of a generation

He’s certainly at the very top, of not the best. I never watch him in a role and think someone else could have done this... much less done it better. He’s incredible.

Did you see him in Mary Magadalene? He turned Jesus into Joaquin Phoenix. His characters often seem like they are on the brink of insanity.

He'll always be the weird little kid that carried his bag of fap material everywhere in Parenthood to me.
I still think of him as Darlen's boyfriend on Roseanne.

it's between him and the rock
which I suppose is better than being between the rock and a hard place

Not the same actor. Darlene's boyfriend was current Big Bang star Johny Galecki.

Tom Hardy should be in that conversation.
Also Benedict Cumberbatch.
Also Benedict Cumberbatch.

Leo generally needs to be in movies where other great actors make him look better than he actually is...He's only carrier one movie that I think was excellent and probably should have won the Oscar and that is the Aviator...

Phoenix absolutely killed it in gladiator. It would be by far the most unlikable villain in a movie if it wasn't for shooter mcgavin
