He' s about to get nominated for a shite ton of acting awards this year for You Were Never Really Here and Don't Worry He Wont Get Far on Foot. His acting in The Master is comparable to a young Brando circa On The Waterfront. This coming of course after the fact that the Hollywood media wrote him off as a complete nutjob.

He’s the best actor of any generation.

He'll always be the weird little kid that carried his bag of fap material everywhere in Parenthood to me.

He is top 10. Maybe top 5. Who is best is a matter of preference.

Hanks
DiCaprio
Bale
Leto
Matthew M

Are mine

Never seen him do a bad job. He can flat out play a role of any type.

Music biopics can be formulaic...but he nails it out of the park as Johnny Cash.

That is one of the most entertaining movies available.

Leto and DiCaprio are the only actors in this thread that is in Phoenix’s generation.

PSH was, but he’s passed.

Gyllenhaal is one gen younger.

Depp is the next gen older.

Gyllenhall is just 6 years younger.

Phoenix is in that group with Bale, Leo, Gylenhall in terms of best of a generation

ETA: if PSH is a choice even though he’s passed, that’s my pick

I'd say one can be a complete nut job and a good actor at the same time.

Ed Norton and Sam Rockwell are just as good in dramas, and both have a lot more comedic range then Phoenix.
