departed from the Christmas connection
Because Christmas is a setting and not a central theme to the movie. You can make a doe hard movie in any setting.
Vermilion is wrong with any opinion concerning Die Hard.
The movies released date was in July for crying out loud.

Like in Home Alone 2, they just let him board the plane with no boarding pass.
Doesn't the movie start with him landing at LAX?

Great and timeless flick.

which you would think, being in L.A. they'd know that everyone would say...why the hell is USC playing Notre Dame around Christmas?
I hate to be a Debbie downer here but I don’t think football season traditions will ever return to normal. This is Covid 19 and future Covids will wreck all kinds of traditions.

Interesting. I have always loved Die Hard and it's an "always watch if it's on" flick. Never thought to apply my criteria for a "perfect" movie to it. The more I do the better it fits. Good call.
Where does Man On Fire fit in the perfect movie realm? It's close to the top of mine.

Watched it last night, great movie.
However, when first entering the building the robbers shoot the first security guard with a silencer. Then immediately after use a flash bang to stun another old security guard before shooting him with a silencer.
Why the hell use a silencer if you are gonna be throwing flashbangs around for no reason?

My EXACT thought watching it earlier this week.
I figure the guy thought it would be cool to roll it around the corner and watch the dude by the elevator be confused by it - I imagine the goon chuckling just around the corner like "watch this" like an 8 year old pulling a prank

The Critical Drinker thinks so.

The original script was set during Thanksgiving.
Notre Dame generally plays at USC during Thanksgiving weekend.
But they changed the setting to Christmas and the lazy Hollywood producers kept that scene in the movie...which you would think, being in L.A. they'd know that everyone would say...why the hell is USC playing Notre Dame around Christmas? They certainly wouldn't be playing in a bowl game against each other...not back then, after playing each other in the final regular season game.
Christmas was added later, but when ND and USC play, they play it early in the fall in South Bend because it's too cold by end of November. If it's in L.A., they schedule it later because Thanksgiving/Christmas season is still warm enough.
Which makes USC look like a bunch of vajs for avoiding playing in cold weather.

Easily a top 10 for me. I can watch anytime it comes on.
