They don’t go anywhere. An argument could perhaps be made that it is a stay at home vacation from work. Some might say that Eddy and fam took a vacation to Chicago but didn’t he just drive there because he had no money for presents or food and knew the Griswolds would provide for them?

Eddie may be a mooch, but I’m not sure if this is exactly what he had in mind. Eddie was just an idiot.

Ellen and Clark's parents went on vacation, and Russ and Audrey were off of school for Christmas vacation

Now that you mention it, doesn't the movie start on like December 8th or something?

I consider it more of an Action Movie that takes place at Christmas.

I say no. You could take everything about vacations out of it and it's just a Christmas movie. It really should take place during Spring Break if you want it to be a vacation movie.

Does going somewhere constitute a "Vacation"? Technically, when is it a vacation vs a family outing/trip?

Going home to visit family isn't a vacation, especially when we're talking about in-laws.

People used to more often call the time off from school / work "Christmas Vacation." You don't hear that much today.

For instance, people would ask "What are you doing for Christmas vacation" instead of just "What are you doing during the holidays."

It technically fits the definition of what a vacation is, even though most associate that with travelling somewhere.

From Merriam Webster

quote:

: 1. a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation had a restful vacation at the beach

2a : a scheduled period during which activity (as of a court or school) is suspended b : a period of exemption from work granted to an employee

3 : a respite or a time of respite from something : INTERMISSION 4 : an act or an instance of vacating

well, the OP says the fact that they didn't go anywhere means it isn't a vacation. so.... going somewhere is part of a vacation.

I don't know why you're being down voted. It's a solid point. No one is on vacation-not even those that traveled.
