There’s a few kids shows that had some adult moments like Ren and Stimpy and Rocko’s Modern Life but Zim might take the cake for darkest or WTF moments a few of them include.

If you didn’t watch the show, it appeared on Nick in the mid 2000’s and was about an alien called Zim that tried to take over the world while a kid named Dib tries to stop him

Zim ripping out a kid’s eyes and replacing them with robotic eyes and ends with the kid getting killed by a squirrel

Dib’s sister Gaz more than likely killing some kid over a video game

Some random dude getting eaten by a shark

The teacher sending some kid to the secret classroom which kind of seemed more like Hell because she didn’t like him

But the most infamous episode was Dark Harvest. Essentially Zim goes around the school of elementary/middle school aged kids and steals their organs and replacing them with random stuff in order to make himself seem human

Oh yeah, whoever made that show was messed up

It’s like this scene in courage the cowardly dog. This thing fricked me up.

That show was insane.

There were some truly weird shows from that generation.

I remember that show largely from all of the merchandise sold at Hot Topic. It was the Rick n Morty of its time, except it wasn't on Adult Swim.

I never saw it, but its animation was so ugly that it didn't have much appeal to me.

Such a weird show, but it is no surprise to me that it garnered the cult Classic status that it had among weird kids.

When you watch it, it seems clear that a lot of “adult” cartoons released since took a lot of notes from that show.

Guys use to go into comic shops and ask if they carried Zim creator Jhonen C. Vasquez's "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" comic, with a gleam in their eye like they were asking for some shocking title.

I definitely watched the hell out of it as a kid but I know for a fact that my mom hated me watching it. Rewatching it now I can see why a super Christian parent might not approve of the show.

Oh just remembered the woman in the Christmas episode dropping dead after her heart exploded with “Christmas joy”

I dunno, some genius thought it was a good idea to give Pee-Wee Herman a children's show back in the late 80's. I remember glancing at that and thinking WTF

He acted like a pervert on that show, and critics kept giving him a pass for "just being silly"... up until he got busted jacking off in a porn theater.

THere were adults targeted at cartoon back then. I remember fondly watching Duckman and Weird Science on USA.

Dark, but harmless. My daughters are now mid-twenties ( no pics pervs.) We still drop: “it’s me, I was the turkey all along”, “ I MADE TOAST”, and “ it’s got chicken legs” whenever the meme fits.

On the other hand, now with the pedo-Nick docs coming out, REN and Stimpy had some pretty deviant content & Fairy Odd- Parents gave me ADD as an adult.

There are different rumors as to why the show got canceled from bad ratings, to being too adult, to the creator calling some Nick executive a count

But there was also the Bloody Gir Easter eggs. Essentially the creator stuck in a frame of Gir covered in blood that was thought to be a fake rumor but apparently is real
