The Lucas Film teamed actually helped Mel Brooks make it. That is why their special effects are way ahead of what they should have been for a comedy spoof genre.

There is a youtube video out there about it. George just had certain conditions like no Space Balls merchandising that could be viewed as competition for his property...could be the reason that joke is in the movie.

Problem is the loss of John Candy and Rick Moranis' refusal to come out of retirement.

Mel said he would never do it without Moranis.

Damn shame in that Spaceballs is the greatest slapstick spoof of all time.
