Sure they did.
Instead of changing cities, Riley is changing schools. Same thing.
Instead of adjusting to a new place, she’s adjusting to a new team… badly in both. The main plot. Same in both.
Instead of Joy misunderstanding Sadness, she misunderstands Anxiety. Same attitude by Joy.
Instead of Joy and Sadness going after core memories lost in the brain, they’re going after Riley’s sense of self in the brain. Same “adventure”.
They get locked up in the brain in both.
Some imagined crush helps them out in both.
Instead of the train of thought, they use the stream of consciousness to get around… until they can’t.
The first ends with Sadness/Joy understanding they need each other… the second ends with Anxiety and Joy coming to that understanding.
Instead of combined memories/emotions at the end, it’s a combined sense of self. Same basic concept.
Did I miss anything?

People gonna be mad about this somehow
I hope not. I hope it's a clear indication to Disney that families want to watch decent movies that don't shoehorn in the agenda of several of the creatives. The market is CLEARLY there for family entertainment.

The bar has been set so low for Pixar these days.
One requirement. Don’t pander.

The plot of the movie.
Pretty clear you read a shitty article about the movie and didn’t see it yourself.

Imagine how good it could have done had they not copied the first one scene for scene.
Not even remotely close to what they did.
Take the canned outrage somewhere else.

I’m as happy as anyone that there wasn’t some shoehorned, political/woke message (although apparently Riley is the only white female playing hockey in San Francisco). But that doesn’t mean I was satisfied with the lack of creativity that used to be synonymous with Pixar.

saw it yesterday and we all loved it. Just a good quality 90-minute movie.
I know I've been giving Disney crap for being unoriginal and they keep making sequels, but I don't see it stopping after this.
Moana 2, Frozen 3 and 4, and Toy Story 5 are already being made. I'm fine with it as long as they story is good.
Mix in a good original or two every year and they will be fine.

Went yesterday morning and the theater was as crowded as I've seen since pre-Covid

they just had a run of pretty poorly performing original movies. The box office speaks loudly and sequels make money.

I don’t care that’s it’s a sequel. And it is making money like Frozen 2 made money. I understand the established IP argument and if anything, it supports my point.
But imagine if Toy Story 2 was just about Andy getting a new new favorite toy. Or if the Monsters University movie was only about the some crazy monster trying to kidnap a kid to suck the screams out of her. Could probably be good movies and fun for kids. But it’s lazy if all you’re changing are the minor details. It’s like the joke in Tropic Thunder with all the sequels.
The tagline: “There’s a new emotion at headquarters. And this time… Joy has to learn to work together… again.”

Shockingly no. I thought for sure they would make the main character a lesbian. They even hinted at her liking boys.
Now, the cast was like the United Nations, which caused some eye-rolling. The only white people in the movie are the main character and her parents.
Black female hockey coach
It must be exhausting for yall

Fair enough.
I went i’m pretty hard on The Hangover 2 the other day.
I haven’t seen Inside Out 2 yet. I don’t see my kid sitting through movies at the theatre yet so I cant speak to the exact plot.

Saw it in Imax on sunday. Movie was good but first was much better. I agree with whoever said it was essentially the same movie wrapped in a shell that looked different. Plenty of funny moments still.

The tubes to central headquarters gets broken so they have to find an alternative route back to HQ.
When they are in the dark part of the brain in both, they have to sing out to find the imaginary object that helps them escape the dark area of the brain (bing bong rocket ship vs pouchy).
Heck, even the scene on the bus vs in the penalty box was essentially the same, just different shell.
I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie, it was fun and an easy watch. You aren't wrong though, it really was essentially the same movie.
