It's an Australian ghost story. It's legit creepy, though its more a ghost story than jumps, gore, and scares. It's unsettling, and told from the point of view a of a child.

the movie you choose must be a certified "cult classic".
So, either The Stuff or Bloodsucking Freaks.

Mainstream, Friday the 13th. Jump scares were still pretty fresh, and that one was the king of them all. Didn't see that shite coming.

I'll also submit a film that borders on suspense and horror and is very effective. In my opinion it holds up well.

The original Flowers in the Attic (1987) starring Louise Fletcher (Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), Victoria Tennant, and a young Kristy Swanson.

Fun fact: The ominous soundtrack which carries this movie was composed by Christopher Young, the same composer who composed music for the original Hellraiser.

This is a movie where the soundtrack is the star.

Trick r Treat for sure. But that's already been mentioned. And Reanimator, and In the Mouth of Madness...ugh.

Suspiria, but I also like Tenebre.

Ravenous would then be my pick. And Zombi 2, which is underrated for sure.

And I'm a big fan of Gordon's other take on Cthulu in Dagon, great little film with some bad acting.

The Hand scared the crap out of me as a kid. I haven't seen it since, and its rottentomatoes rating suggests it's not very good.

Movies gain cult status retroactively all the time. Monster Squad qualifies.
