I'm like Baloo on this one. It's a ridiculous movie with a generally incoherent plot and setup.

But I always watch it when it's on

(I'm not saying it's a great movie, but what it wants to do, it was a lot of fun.

This message board era is really hurting peoples ability to just enjoy a film. Not everything needs to be nitpicked to death. Schlock is good. Some of my favorite films are complete schlock (Rocky 3 & 4, Bloodsport, Predator, etc).

Im not saying the scene in Kill Bill was great, but it actually was a legit fight to the death not a stupid pretend fight.

This is one of the things that elevates the great films to works of art over mere commerce (e.g. the MCU films).

Few have executed that balance between literally deadly consequences and humor the way QT does. Like the Mexican standoffs that have become sort of his language. Look at how well they are done, especially the Meta AF one in Inglorious Basterds.

These big franchise films can copy the forms but not the substance of the greats, IMHO. Some of it is clearly the limitations of the "products" as even Whedon was limited in what he was able to do or not do in the first 2 Avengers films. Nolan is about the closest to a true auteur in any of these and he was 1/3 with his Dark Knight trilogy (come at me bro - I mean as far as elevating it to or near the level of Art) - and that took a 540' homerun that dented the scoreboard from Ledger.

But you're also making the mistake of comparing mostly one off films, that are REAL films mostly - meaning that they focus on replicating reality (sans Lucy), and a comic book film with an established character that has now appeared in like 10 movies.

That's a good point but if you could name the characters in the MCU as REAL, Black Widow is arguably the most REAL right? There's not a whole lot about this that screams super hero.

Maybe the fact that it's a comic book changes things?

That was part of my point. It obviously does. The "i'm excited for this movie because its a comic book even though its like a lot of movies that I dont like or typically dont like."

quote:

And, as Myth said, none of this makes sense with the backlash that Captain Marvel is still receiving to this day.

Well, despite the backlash of Captain Marvel, people are excited about this movie. You're not going to see many people saying "well Capt. marvel sucked so i'm not going to see Black Widow." It doesnt come out until another 5 months and the excitement is going to build up pretty strong. Also, regardless of the backlash Capt. Marvel got, people went to see it by the boatloads. It had over $60,000 in VIDEO sales. So a movie with a ton of backlash made a billion dollars and after it was out of theaters a movie that supposedly nobody liked made a ton in DVD/Blu-ray/Downloads.

No. It isn't. The very definition is trash.

We all have trash movies we like but admit it is trash and not for general consumption.

I like The Box. No. I actually love The Box. I understand that most reasonable people will believe it to be garbage.

But I love it .

I’m excited to see it because Black Widow has earned her own movie, it’s not like she’s just shoehorned in. She’s been a big part since the beginning and an OG Avenger who led the team after Infinity War. Been a crowd favorite and highlight most of that time too.

I also like that it’ll be different because it’ll be more spy look since she’s not a powered individual. Could be more like Winter Soldier which is a nice change of pace.

Also ScarJo obviously

I'd much rather a movie have genuine ambition and fail rather than strive for mediocrity and achieve it. Which goes to why the list of movies to comp Black Widow to doesn't make sense unless it's a general "I hate women" list, which would be sad. Lucy is the kind of movie the MCU would never make because of its bonkers nature. They have too much tied to the brand to make a movie that is willing to have someone vomit the spectrum of light.

It's not because it's a comic book, the point is "I'm excited for this movie because Black Widow has been a cool character for 40 years on paper and the last 11 years on film."

It's not about the medium it's that people have a better connection to Black Widow than Salt just by simple metrics of exposure.

Which precisely means this has nothing to do with gender or girl power and everything to do with the character in question - who has proven to be more interesting than other female characters. Especially those with no history or background.

Brie got slammed from day 1.

I think Scarlet gets a pass because she was in the most successful franchise in history and she deserves a break.

Scarlett gets a pass because she's not overly political. Brie Larson wears her politics on her chest and people got sick of her for it.

The attachment I can see. Even though she's a pretty boring character but that's beside the point I'm already making enough people mad. So is there anything that could make someone not want to see a movie that was connected to this past phase of the MCU? Because a really bad trailer doesnt do it I guess.

Right, so then the OP is kind of off the mark a bit?

If you're asking "Is there a reason for people not fans of the MCU or fans of BW to go see the film?" Outside of someone who doesn't like action movies...then yeah, probably not.

But again, that isn't the OP.

I have no problem with movies with kickass female leads if it makes sense for the story and isn't forced (i.e., girl power just for girl power sake - as opposed to integral part of the story).

Ellen Ripley (Aliens)
Sara Connor (T2)
Charlie Baltimore (Long Kiss Goodnight)
Eowyn (Two Towers/ROTK) - book established her as a sheildmaiden

Obviously others pointed out here, but I note these since they are from movies well before the "girl power" movement.

Edited. I meant that those were movies nobody no guy actually wanted to see or thought looked good.

Hanna was great, and had a ton of guys both watching and wanting to watch it when it came out.

There were tons of people who wanted and did watch Lucy when it came out(I personally didn't like it, but it had a decent amount of people hyped for it).

This is just a straight terrible take.
