re: I enjoyed Parasite but fairly surprised it beat out 1917.

Well I apologize then. I’ll make sure to never question your opinion again and will advise the rest on this board to do the same. I must have forgotten that those who work in the industry always know exactly what they’re talking about
How about you read the articles I linked from industry insiders that actually explain and corroborate my opinion instead? Mendes has been plagiarizing Nolan (and others) for several years now.
Example:
quote:
As easy as it is to look at 1917 and just see a kind of carbon copy of Dunkirk (in spite of the fact that the former film is dedicated to Mendes’ grandfather, a lance corporal in World War I whose stories of his time in battle inspired the film), we shouldn’t ignore the fact that this isn’t the first time Mendes has either deliberately or unintentionally been inspired by Christopher Nolan.

I have read similar articles. And they’re not totally wrong. My main point in my first post towards you had more to do with you having your mind made up well before the movie ever came out. That’s all
While those articles do make some valid points, what are your thoughts on the DGA (made up of prominent figures in your industry) awarding him with best director feature film?

Oldboy, The Wailing, Memories of a Murder, A Moment to Remember, I Saw the Devil, The Chaser, The Haindmaden, the Man from Nowhere, Bad Guy; Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. 3-Iron.

Kim Ki-Duk is definitely an acquired taste. Spring, Summer, etc. is one of my faves, but his pacing challenges most. YMMV
To the guy requesting recs:
Tae Guk Gi is one of the best war movies ever made.
The Housemaid (1960) shows just how long South Korea has been making weird, violent quality flicks.
The Good, The Bad, and the Weird is a psycho Western that's a blast.
Right Now, Wrong Then and Secret Sunshine are two great examples of straight forward (sort of) Korean dramas.
All of Bong's pre-Parasite, South Korean movies are essential.

1917 is a plagiarized mish mash of Dunkirk, Saving Private Ryan, and the Dunkirk tracking shot from Atonement.
I haven't seen it yet, but all of the trailers were uninspiring. I literally looked at my wife and said "Saving Private Dunkirk" as soon as the trailer ended the first time I saw it.

My Way is probably the best Korean movie I have yet seen, and I've seen a few.

I really liked both movies. I didn’t mind Parasite winning so much as I hated that 1917 didn’t get at least one of the big two.
I’m not trying to nit pick about Parasite, but I had a hard time with the ending. I was hoping for some sort of redemption angle for either one of the dads or the son. I never saw one. I really have a hard time figuring out whose story we were watching. I guess the son’s? I also thought the symbolism was a little heavy handed.

Why would anyone want to copy Dunkirk?

Parasite is an original vision masterfully constructed and executed. It looks like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

List all movies you've seen in which a poor family infiltrates a rich one and then discovers another family has already done so, all while maintaining a darkly comedic tone. Ready, Go!

Are you referring to Parasite? Bc the message was in no way coherent nor was it artfully delivered.
What was the message?

I just saw 1917. Saw Parasite last week. Parasite was original. 1917 was a solid film. Surprised by the lack of action in 1917. In comparison to other war movies it wasn't as good as Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket etc.etc.

With the exception of Birdman every best picture winner since 2013 has been anti-white, anti-Christian, anti-heterosexual, anti-military and/or anti-capitalist

Can’t disagree with that. One movie had a damn a creature screwing a woman. Pure garbage

After The Hurt Locker and Argo won Best Picture the award just doesn’t mean what it used to many people. Let’s not forget that Crash won as well. Both Parasite and 1917 were great films. Best of 2019.

Have you seen many Korean movies? They are not as fond of happy endings as Americans.

Wat?
Spotlight isn't any of those things.
Neither was The Shape of Water.
