AMC Theatres has already sold 20,000 same-day tickets for ‘Barbieheimer’ double viewing—but box office rival Tom Cruise won’t join the movement

quote:

Hype around upcoming blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer is already juicing box office sales, spawning memes and generating fan-made merchandise.

Moviegoers are so determined to see both films that many are making plans to cram both in on the same day—sparking debate online about the “correct” order in which to watch the wildly different movies.

Demand for the double feature—which has become known as “Barbieheimer”—has already been feeding into box office sales ahead of the movies’ July 21 release date.

quote:

Theater chain AMC said in an email that more than 20,000 members of its AMC Stubs loyalty program had already booked to see Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day.

quote:

Christopher Nolan’s three-hour war epic Oppenheimer is projected to make more than $40 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s twist on the classic Mattel doll—which has had a huge pre-release marketing campaign—is expected to earn between $70 million and $80 million at the U.S. box office over the July 21–23 weekend.

That would give Barbie at least the seventh highest-grossing opening weekend in the U.S. this year, while Oppenheimer would rank at least as the 13th biggest opening weekend at the domestic box office, according to data from IMDb’s Box Office Mojo.

I have tickets for Oppenheimer on the 21st. I'm sure we'll eventually get around to watching Barbie, but not on opening weekend.

Cruise thinks seeing Oppenheimer first is the correct call...

“I want to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer,” he said in a recent interview with Variety. “I’ll see them opening weekend. Friday I’ll see Oppenheimer first, and then Barbie on Saturday.”

Good to see some original ideas being put out and getting hyped up. Hopefully this leads to more original projects and less rehashing of already made movies.

Why Barbie? I don’t get it. As a dude, I have zero interest in that.

Same here. I can't imagine how any person would want to see both of these movies. These seem to have completely opposite audiences.

Me three. I can’t imagine these 2 movies having much crossover appeal at all.

Will not be seeing Barbie .

Not me. Can't see why I'd go to Barbie since I don't have kids. Not sure I'd take kids to see Oppenheimer.

You don't think there is anyone in America who likes both Christopher Nolan and the team of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach?

I bet you also wonder why in the world anyone would listen to music other than Dad Rock too.

It's rated PG-13, it's not a kids movie to begin with. I have no idea who this is supposed to be marketed to.

Middle aged millennial women, and the LGBTQ community. Would be surprised if the early afternoon shows are busier because they’ll go to brunch and then the barbie movie.

Probably all women old enough for the movie. I want to see it. My DIL and a bunch of friends (30 somethings) are getting pink "Come on Barbie, Let's go Party" shirts made and doing brunch and the movie. I think there will be a whole lot of that with 20-40ish. The 30 somethings grew up with the Barbie Girl song. I bet half the theater will be wearing pink.

It's pretty much the same market as a Taylor Swift concert. See how well those are doing?

This seems really ridiculous to me. I’m expecting to be completely emotionally drained after watching Oppenheimer.
