Do I think this Joker could take on Batman and be his arch nemesis? No, but I don’t care. The film works on its own terms.

Doesn't that really depend on what kind of Batman he is facing?

Have you been living under a rock?

Movie critics/Media personalities have created all sorts of inventive ways to shoehorn their criticism of Trump in works that have absolutely nothing to do with him.

Your response appears to have nothing to do with statement to which you're responding...

"It about a white guy who gets picked on by society and turns violent becoming a folk hero. Poor white males, boohoo" - Some dude on the Ringer, probably.

Most of the negative reviews I read seemed extremely politically motivated. I really enjoyed that movie

Just a few that come up...

quote:

This Is the Joker the Trump Era Deserves—But Not the One We Need Right Now

quote:

While many reviewers have focused on Fleck as an "incel" hero -- his status as a sexless loner who turns to violence -- the true nature of the movie's appeal is actually broader: It's an insidious validation of the white-male resentment that helped bring President Donald Trump to power.

quote:

But what struck me more is how revealing Joker is of Hollywood’s attitude to the American political situation. This adaptation of the character who has been around 80 years is distinctly ‘timely’ – you can imagine the studio discussions about ‘relevance’ in the year following Donald Trump’s election, when Todd Phillips was writing the script.
The allegory can’t be avoided: it’s the story of how, given the right entertainer-leader, a popular movement can tap into people’s darkest feelings and tear society apart –

It’s not as deep as some make it out to be and is a knockoff of other, better movies

You just described the overwhelming majority of "critically acclaimed" movies made in the last 20 years.

I can't see any connection to Trump at all. It was a unique take on the Joker origin story that was heavily influenced by King Of Comedy and Taxi Driver. Some people just see Trump hiding behind everything.

It would get better reviews if it wasn't called Joker. Outside of Phoenix's acting the movie is only slightly above average. As a Batman tie in its very weak.

if you've seen this movie more than once, you know the luster of it fades each time. i should've only watched it the one time. took a friend the second time, he pointed everything wrong about it and made it a mediocre move for me.

If you are going to make it out to be commentary on a current hot button issues, then it’s about mental health. The mental health treatment in our country is pathetic and is not helped by every attention whore out there blaming their stupidity on some fantasy mental health issues. Yes ladies we know you have issues - you’re a woman. There are people who genuinely need help and their issues don’t need to be politicized.

The best worst film I have ever seen. Not one uplifting moment.

I really liked it - but the criticisms seem fair (leaving out the batshit insane ones that sad it was going to cause mass shootings). 68% feels right.

Mixed to average reviews”

Aside from the brilliant character study, the movie is an engrossing society examination. It pulls back layers that reveal a lot of questions.

Yes, it is morbid and dark. But those aspects should not be determinative in their own regarding a review.

I feel the movie should have been more critically acclaimed.

I thought it was disturbing and thought provoking. Joaquim Phoenix was incredible and believable. Yes, the movie should have been more critically acclaimed.

Does it need more formulaic mental health breakdown dramas? Maybe. There are plenty, and several are better than Joker. I guess Todd thought including crap about the Waynes would hide that formula

I'm no movie critic, and I don't usually enjoy or watch comic book movies.

But I watched the Joker and I really enjoyed it. So much so that I watched it again a few months later.

It was a good movie.
