Phoenix tried too hard IMO. The Deniro scene was forced as well.

Heath Ledger tried pretty hard too. It won him a lot of praise.

Jared Letto also tried ", real hard ". All he did was gross out his co-stars and get his version of JOKER shipped to purgatory, never to see the light of day again.

Joaquim committed to the part, and was every bit on par w/ Heath or Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyer's Club. I don't see how either " tried too hard ".

DeNiro was supposed to be campy, hokey and ' forced '. Note his on air persona vs his off stage one.

I think some are just searching for nits to pick here.

Outside of Phoenix's acting the movie is only slightly above average.

Noticed this on Amazon Prime and got around to watching it. I have to agree with this statement. I wasn't a fan of the story and doubt I'll ever rewatch it.

I feel like Joker took the best of both movies and smashed them together with a dash of Batman lore to make arguably a more compelling and focused movie. That’s probably an unpopular opinion and I definitely think King of Comedy and Taxi Driver did many things better

there is a fine line perhaps between homage and rip off, but Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy (arguably Scoreses' most underrated movie) are vastly superior movies. I think you could argue the only reason some people like/defend Joker is because its a "Batman" villain.

While enjoyable and great performances by Phoenix and DeNiro. It's still just a really shallow story. They got a lot of mileage out of it though. And does have a bit of a Frankenstein narrative framework using just one guy which adds a bit to the depth.

I mean they make him childlike and this is the guy that's going to take on the Wayne Empire?

He's considered a fool among fools even with his clown co-workers.

It's not just mental illness, he's never portrayed as smart...just a mentally ill person with mild retardation. I think the movie fricked up. Showing that he was mentally ill was fine but they had to sprinkle in something to show he was super-smart beyond some laughing Tourette's guy with retardation and a gun vigillante.

Actually a really good point. There was nothing in that movie that made me think this guy was a future criminal mastermind. Even more support for the argument they just made him Joker to have a tie-in to the Batman universe and make it somewhat more interesting.

On top of this, there was nothing deep about the movie at all to me. It takes a guy with existing mental health problems and he's put over the edge by an utterly ridiculous society in which absolutely everyone are assholes right from the start. Nothing about his transition to Joker was particularly compelling to me.

Both are depressing and not rewatchable for me, but I’d rather Joker over Taxi Driver. I found it more entertaining

Could not disagree with this more. I mean agree Taxi Driver is a depressing film that's hard to rewatch but its brilliant and there's more character development to Travis Bickle than Arthur Fleck, and other interesting. characters (Cybil Sheppard, Albert Brooks and of course Jodi Foster) i don't find anything remotely entertaining about Joker and no other characters except maybe DiNiro that are remotely interesting.
