Nabakov was Russian, not French

The book was really popular and James Mason was a big star. Movie is really good too.

This might be the creepiest thing I’ve ever seen and that’s just the preview.

What a bunch of perverts who think sexualizing a 14 yr old is somehow acceptable.

The French are some weird fricks y’all.

It's widely considered a classic but highly controversial novel.

In a related story, I remember watching a preview for Jurassic Park and wondering where Spielberg got an idea like that.

Well you’re the one performing with pancake on your face. I just started a thread.

Pretty much this.

The entire ad campaign was basically “How could anyone make a movie of Lolita?”, mainly because it was widely known and controversial. Kubrick pulling it off in the days of the Hays Code was impressive.

How are you defining "mainstream"?

Lolita was a moderate commercial success on a small-ish budget that was divisive when it was released 57 years ago, and is currently considered one of Kurick's lesser films.

The movie doesn't exactly glamorize it.

Lesser films?? Lolita is in his top 10 in every critic's ranking.

“Lesser” is a relative term when discussing Kubrick.

A lesser work by him is generally considered better than many other directors’ magnum opus.

It’s a great film and it’s the furthest thing from glamorizing underage sex. Mason kills it. Kubrick’s one mistake was in falling in love with Sellers to the point that he allowed such broad performances. Would’ve been much better if he’d restrained him a bit. The big reveal of Sellers dual role just didn’t work.

Cracking the top 10 isn't hard when the director in question made 11 true features, two 65 minute no-budget films, and a few forgettable shorts.

Taxi Driver was similarly critiqued because of the Jodie Foster hooer role. Perhaps moreso at the time. It was quite controversial on a lot of levels .... free PR made it a massive hit at the box office.
