What an incredible film. First film that’s made me super emotional to the verge of tears in a long time. Efron, at least, should have been nominated.

Anyone else seen it? Fair warning, it’s pretty goddamn sad.

Tough competition this year ...
It was good, but not great ...
And it came out late in the campaign season, which i think worked against it.

I enjoyed it, but never felt it was an Academy threat.

Question: did you watch WCCW/Von Erichs back in the day?

I’m watching this right now. I grew up on this and the casting is killing me. It’s not a bad acting effort it’s just tough as far as their relative size and stuff.
Kerry being so much smaller is weird and also his look doesn’t go.
David is good size but a pretty boy compared go oafish Real David.
Zach is barely sufficient to work as Kevin.
The Fritz role and performance was good.
Mike performance is good but he’s too tall. By like a foot.
It’s a lot less wrestling/locker room, biz drama than I thought so far. Mainly just living/grow pain issues.

I was a kid of the 80's, so followed regional wrestling but i don't have a lasting memory of this family. I have no doubt it is a well done representation of the family and the time, but didn't make it a great movie for me. Take Maestro for instance (also well executed to the period, but not great)

I did enjoy it though ... just not a best picture contender for me. Zac generally acts up the level of his fellow other actors and he did a fine job as well on this one.

Personally, I really wanted to work on this project but timing was off. Would have been fun to work on it in my hometown.

I have yet to see it, but this seemed to be the consensus of those I know who have.

It has been a couple of months, so I don't remember exactly how Bruce Prichard described it on his podcast, but he basically said it was a good fictional movie.

I think he did say Holt McCallany's portrayal of Fritz was eerily accurate though.

I guess I grew up on the big Vince brand in the 80s...because this feels like just a Texas thing and never heard of them....until now, because I didn't grow up in Texas.

Wrestling on TV was WWF...Rowdy Roddy Piper, Andre, Hulk, Macho man. Kinda astonishing they were contemporaries when regional wrestling was mostly bought up by Vince. Almost seems like underground wrestling from a bygone era.

Rightfully so .. two real contenders. ZOI came on late, but Past Lives was getting the buzz in the summer.

Oppenheimer seemed to do just fine and i don't recall much of a DEI element. Same with the Holdovers, Barbie, Maestro, Past Lives.

The Color Purple did not fare as well.

Too toxic.

Many who saw it said it was film of the year.

Well I haven't seen it and probably won't, but to hear this board tell it, the Rick Flair character is a pile of shite.

Maybe that's why.

The subject was great (and that is totally opinion of course) and they did a fantastic job nailing the authenticity of the time period.

That said, it was rather average otherwise. The dialog was weak, the plot had holes and was slow at times, they did a shite job developing the Kerry Von Erich character, and they glossed over the extent of the rampant cocaine, pain killer, and alcohol abuse which has long been accepted as the over riding factor of why the Von Erichs turned out like they did. If it werent for the subject matter, I would not have finished he movie.

The guy who played Kerry should’ve been nominated for Best Midget Playing a Full-Size role

Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon don’t deserve to be on there…

Everyone has their own interests. I was never into pro wrestling, so this movie was never going to be on my radar. But I know many who do know the story, to varying degrees, and it really hit with them. I can't say I'd ever get it. But just like with Oppenheimer, based on a true story, artistic license is expected.
