ok, dont be too specific now.

I think a good starting point could be any Ken Burns documentary. He is top notch. The two best imo, which I think is probably the general opinion, would be The Civil War and Baseball. The Dust Bowl was really good too.

You cant go wrong with any of those.

The World at War is the definative WWII Doc. Worth the time investment.

For a shorter, more recent sport/geopolitical watch, check out Red Army. It chronicles the dominant Soviet Hockey team through the Cold War, with great interviews that focus on the ‘80 Olympics and subsequent influx of Russian players into the NHL.

There are 2 BBC documentary series by historian Niall Ferguson:
The Ascent of Money and Civilization: The West and the Rest.
Both are top notch.

The World at War

Came to post this.

Another good Ken Burns is The History of Jazz. Not quite as good as Baseball or CW but if you have any interest of Jazz it’s a good history doc.

I like the Empire series by PBS.

The Greeks
Napolean
Roman Empire
Egypt

All on Youtube.

But my favorite is In Search of the Trojan War by Michael Wood because he's so passionate.

In fact, all Wood's docs are great.

Story of England
Alexander the Great
Conquistadors

Michael Wood is up there with Burns. He is a first class storyteller.

Watch Conquistadors or Trojan War and you will be impressed.

I'd also recommend Dan Carlins Hardcore History podcast for a deep dive into topics

The Day the Universe Changed (dailymotion)
quote:

The Day the Universe Changed (subtitled "A Personal View by James Burke") is a British documentary television series written and presented by science historian James Burke, originally broadcast in 1985 by the BBC. The series' primary focus is on the effect of advances in science and technology on western society in its philosophical aspects.

The title comes from the philosophical idea that the universe essentially only exists as you perceive it through what you know; therefore, if you change your perception of the universe with new knowledge, you have essentially changed the universe itself.

To illustrate this concept, James Burke tells the various stories of important scientific discoveries and technological advances and how they fundamentally altered how western civilization perceives the world.

"Civilization" is sort of like that. By Clarke?

There's a documentary series that is about 6 DVDs.

Can't remember the title, but they take a famous artist and his most famous work and tell the story of it.

If you know nothing about art, it's fascinating.

I think it was - The Private Life of a Masterpiece - IMDB

I've seen it, it's very good - btw it's on YT

Civilization is about art while TDTUC is about science/technology. Watch both and let them fight it out

Every Ken Burns Doc. One not mentioned as much that I really loved was The Roosevelts. Really well done.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln"

Woody Harrelson's portrayal of "LBJ"

And the HBO series of John Adams.

As much as I enjoy these Presidential movies, I'm cautious of the leftist slant of anything coming out of Hollywood. Now with that out of the way,

I love seeing how these men acted in their day to day duties in their respective time period. This is the kind of stuff you didn't learn about in history class in public school. The decisions they had to make and the stress put on them is very interesting.

If you're looking for a deep dive into history, then books, audio books, and podcasts are your best bet.

I'm a podcast fan myself, and there are a number of great ones for really any topic you could want.

#1 GOAT Podcast: Hardcore History. This shite is the truth. Dan Carlin is also the GOAT. Blueprint for Armageddon is a masterwork. Wrath of the Khans, Death Throes of the Republic, Ghosts on the Ostfront, the new japanese one, can't really go wrong with any of them.

History of Rome (W/ Duncan): Extremely thorough, anything you could ever want to know about Rome

Revolutions (Also Duncan): it's about revolutions. Each season tackles a different one.

Nice. Added to my list.

May not be exactly what you are looking for but Dawn of Humanity on Netflix is a really great documentary about the origins of the human species.

Burns does a really good job on his documentaries and pretty much lays out the facts irrespective of what you may think politically. The Civil War was great as was the WWI documentary, but his Dust Bowl, NYC, and the West documentaries were money as well
