I do not understand the "filler" charge at all.

You and I agree on that, and I didn't charge them with "filler" at all. Like I've said, the whole show is filler by default, it's a guy spending nine years telling his kids about shite that's already happened, and how he met their mother.

Also, making the reveal a throwaway line is another standard HIMYM writer trick ("Yeah. Fake jukebox.") Putting the cast in alternate roles in Barney's fantastic stories is also a common HIMYM thing

It is VERY common on the show, but that doesn't mean it always hits. I was just expecting Barney to have already built up his immnity, so to speak, for the next slap...that would also have been a classic HIMYM thing.
quote:

This episode was super HIMYM (too much, IMO... I think the overdid the cartoonish elements and played a little bit too close to form).

Agree with that. Over the top is fine, but this one was a little too much.

Except for the Boyz II Men part.

I know, I just replied to you because you tend to side with the more critical crowd, but you're a thoughtful critic of the show.

totally agree as well. I don't think this episode totally works, though I thought it was stronger in the final ten minutes, particularly Boys II Men and the slow motion slap. I also like how the show demonstrated just how ridiculously low stakes this is by having the two sit down and discuss the quality of the slap. I thought the episode was pretty average, but it was distinctly HIMYM. And there was enough callbacks to make the show even more rewarding for longtime fans ("I backpacked there one summer.")

It's such a fine line. But a lot is how it's delpoyed. I liked how Marshall uses the bag gold to pay Carl for the jukebox, leading to one of the better throw away lines "This is much gold.") I loved pretty much everything in the Calligrapher scene (I'm assuming there is no Mrs. Calligrapher?). But the slapping tree didn't really work for me. Like... at all.

I don't think this was one of their best episodes ever, but geez... this is pretty much everything HIMYM has been for nine seasons. It even had the gang back at Mclaren's, just bs'ing each other. If you don't like this episode, you really don't like the show and never have. This episode was super HIMYM (too much, IMO... I think the overdid the cartoonish elements and played a little bit too close to form).

I think there are a lot of people that wanted the show to end 2-3 seasons ago and anything that does not get them closer to tapping out angers them. It's too bad for them, because I enjoyed the episode.

Eh, I'm usually not too critical in terms of quality though, since I hae no emotional attachment to the show from the beginning. But I know what you're saying.

Agreed, and that's one thing I always like about Community. They play everything up to be so over the top and important, and then come back down to Earth with "this is just a ____" comments and it's funny. HIMYM does that well a lot of the time. People can relate to shite like that, because I can think of ten different scenarios I've had with my friends that were SO damn hilarious/important, but most other people would laugh at us and think we were idiots.

I thought it was interesting, but like WS said...it was weird that they had Barney actually buy into any of the shite Marshall was saying, because clearly none of it happened. But I appreciated the effort though, for the most part...it just fell flat. It felt like they tried a LITTLE too hard, and like you said, that made it a little too over-the-top and cartoonish and it didn't work in the end.

All in all, I enjoyed the episode..just didn't think it was very good. This season has been solid though.

Yeah, being gone a year? While it was so absurd I laughed, the bit should have fallen apart right there.

The Lily/Marshall thing reminds me a lot of the Jim/Pam "fight" at the end of The Office. Glad to see Marshall finally stand up for himself.

Lily has been an underrated bitch for a while now

Shes an awful person and Marshall deserves better, hes just too soft to do anything about it until now

And then after winning every fight EVER, she runs off like a little bitch the first time Marshall ever drops a bomb. She said duck the kid and my friends, my husband just won an argument an I need to go.

She couldnt even formulate a response when he slapped that truth bomb on her face

"Ummm you still havent forgiven me for that...that was 7 years ago"

First off, he should never forgive you for that because he shouldve never gotten back with you after that bullshite. Why would i trust a chick that just randomly decided that she wasnt to go to San Fransico and paint her shitty shite.

Second of all, even if he did forgive you for that, red flags would still be alarming in his head once you start opening you mouth about your "dream" what was your dream again? TO PAINT IN SAN FRANCISCO AND YOU SUCKED NOW SIT YO arse DOWN LITTLE GIRL. Now Art Critiquing is your dream? Stop it. You have a child and Marshall has a dream too.

That was honestly one of the most satisfying pieces of television ive seen. Its an intense version of the moment Bill hooked up with the cheerleader on freaks and geeks

She ran off because she knew she was wrong. She'll have a come to Jesus moment and realize that she is in the wrong and that Marshall should have a try at his dream, since it's all he has wanted.

I doubt it

Theyll probably come up with some bogus compromise that lets Lily think shes right and Marshall be a judge

If marshall apologizes ill be a little pissed

I had to pause it when Marshall dropped the bomb. I was too excited. Lilly will probably come back with a judge's robe or something and everything will be fine.
